"Hospital names new CFO"

Danville Register & Bee
Friday, July 20, 2007

DANVILLE - Danville Regional Medical Center has a new chief financial officer.
Mark T. Anderson has been CFO of the hospital since July 2. For the past five years, he has held that same office at the LifePoint Hospitals Inc.-owned Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Anderson is a Martinsville city councilman and will resign from that post to relocate to Danville.
He said in a news release that he and his family - wife Lisa and children Jordan, Brian and Melissa - are looking forward to moving to Danville.
“We have a contract on a house here, and we are putting our house on the market in Martinsville,” Anderson said Thursday. “We are planning on having our children attend Danville schools in the fall.”
Anderson said he does not know yet if he will seek political office in Danville.
“I enjoy politics, but my focus will be to work with the physicians, my administrative peers and associates to provide quality health care services in Danville,” Anderson said.
“We look forward to the expertise and nearly 20 years of experience that Mark brings to this position,” Ruth McDaniel, interim CEO for the hospital, said in the release. “He has a proven track record and our associates are already benefiting from his leadership.”

Yeah, article states that the associates are already benefitting from the new CFO. I have not got anything from him. However, ask the folks in the business office that got fired and the ones from Martinsville he brought with him. That must be what Ruth meant by employees already benefitting, Martinsville people got jobs to help with their unemployment issues. The spin just gets better and better.

The new CFO is questioning staffing levels...that is correct....staffing levels....just wait to see what happens in the weeks to come.

Here we go, more slash and burn, probably for the big bonus he'll get for combat/relocation pay.

The degree of negligence promoted by lifepoint is absolutely DISGUSTING. I can NO longer stand to see the safety of my ,and other, patients compromised for the absurd monetary gain of a few individuals who produce ABSOLUTELY NOTHING,only piles of charts and graphs that do NOTHING to promote health and progression in Danville. I never thought I would see the day when I would leave due to the idiocy and corruption of a HOSPITAL a city council or government possibly but a medical facility!!!!!......
A CFO that starts out lying about where he will live is questionable, starting out saying we need to cut staff is a HUGE mistake in a service industry.
A few employees cannot support millionaire salaries and bonuses.
Sad indeed that a few people could hold down 50,000 for so long, and now they have finally killed a city that eventually may have flourished if for no other reason than geography.
I know everywhere has its own problems but I can't wait to leave danville. I only wish my whole family could go too and escape the MOUNTAINOUS corruption in danville.
God help us.

The following, picked up from the bottom of another string, is too rich and delightful not to be given more prominence:

How about some local humor...

How many Danvillians does it take to change a lightbulb?

......None, they're too afraid to try.

Why did Mr. Gwaltney cross the road?

......Because Mr. Davenport told him to.

What does the City Council have to say about Corruption in Danville?

......"it's a private matter."

What is the difference between a slug and a Danville City Council member?

......None, they both lack a spine.

What is the difference between Lifepoint and a bucket of manure?

......The bucket.

What is the only brand of ice cream allowed to be served at DRMC?

......Ben & Jerry's.

How can you tell when the City Manager Gwaltney is lying?

......His lips are moving.

How do you know which days are the ones that Ben Davenport is not making money at the expense of Danville?

......Sorry, trick question -- there are no such days.

What do you get when you cross a bullet-riddled corpse and Police Chief Broadfoot?

......A suicide.

What do City officials consider to be "progress" in Danville?

......A pile of 100-year-old bricks

How does City Council handle critical situations that affect the entire population of Danville

......"it's a private matter."

The travelers will disappear and the nursing directors will be held accounatable for staff in a way they have not yet been held. She won their allegiance and now they will pay the price. Editorial: Is Anderson staying or going?
Sunday, July 22, 2007
Martinsville Bulletin

Martinsville City Councilman Mark Anderson needs to make up his mind. Is he leaving Martinsville — and the city council — or not?

Mr. Anderson has taken a new job, as chief financial officer of Danville Regional Medical Center. Before that, he was CFO at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville for five years. Both hospitals are owned by LifePoint Hospitals.

On Wednesday, Mr. Anderson confirmed his new job but said he was not planning on leaving Martinsville or his council seat. On Thursday, the Danville hospital issued a release stating that he does plan to resign from city council and move to Danville.

So which is it?

Martinsville residents deserve an answer. Mr. Anderson can be private about his hospital job, but he needs to go public with his true intentions about the job voters elected him to do.

The Danville hospital release states that Mr. Anderson has a contract on a house there and plans to have his children in Danville schools in the fall. Surely, Mr. Anderson knew that on Wednesday when he told the Bulletin that he had no plans to resign from city council and move to Danville. And even if it takes time to finalize his move, it sounds like his commitment is shifting east of Martinsville, and he should notify city council — and hence the voters — of that so the process of finding his successor can begin.

From the Martinsville Bulletin on July 19:

"Councilman says he has no plans now to leave city

Martinsville City Councilman Mark Anderson has taken a job in Danville and although his employer said he expects him to move there, Anderson said he has no plans to leave Martinsville — or the city council — at this time."

Then on the 20th:

"Councilman will resign, employer says
Mark Anderson does plan to resign his seat on the Martinsville City Council and move to Danville, his new employer announced Thursday.

Anderson “is planning on resigning from that post (city council) as a result of his relocation plans to the city of Danville,” stated a news release from Danville Regional Medical Center, where he now is chief financial officer.

“My family...looking forward to making the move to Danville,” Anderson stated in the release. “We have a contract on a house here, and we are putting our house on the market in Martinsville. We are planning on having our children attend Danville schools in the fall.”

On Wednesday, Anderson told the Martinsville Bulletin that he had no plans to leave Martinsville — or the city council — at this time.

When a reporter asked if his Martinsville house is for sale, he said, “not at the moment.” When the reporter asked Anderson if his children are enrolled in schools in Martinsville or Danville, he replied, “I haven’t decided that yet.”

Anderson could not be reached for comment Thursday."

"The travelers will disappear and the nursing directors will be held accountable for staff in a way they have not yet been held."
It's already begun, the charge nurses are being leaned on about staffing again.I guess the new ratio's will be 1 nurse to each floor.

Why would anyone want to move their family to Danville, given how we "welcome" outsiders? Haven't seen anyone applaud the fact that we have a guy that is a public service volunteer. Nope...it's badmouthing from the get-go. And remember, its CFO not CGO (Chief Give-away Officer) that so many would like to see.

sentinel event said...

The point that I am looking at is not so much Mr. Anderson's professional qualifications, of which I do not know much at this point, but rather his arrival is already surrounded by debate and uncertainty (of which we have had an abundance in the past two years).

If he is indeed the man for the job, then welcome aboard Mr. Anderson. We look forward to working with you. It's time to get the right people at the helm and move this thing forward.

Anonymous said...

...and as I referenced above, I probably wouldn't want to bring my family to Uncertainty-ville either. Why not let the two little small-town rags try to sell papers with such nonsense and focus on this fellow's business acumen after he's actually part of the team?

sentinel event said...

As an elected official and an executive in the corporation in question (both before and after his move), I guess public and employee speculation about his impact on both communities is warranted.

His constituents in Martinsville deserve to know what his plans are, as do those who will be answering to the new guy at the C-level at DRMC.

The point being, there is already uncertainty. LPNT handles nothing smoothly. So, their usual left hand-right hand problem has caused Mr. Anderson an uncomfortable situation in which to start. Obviously the two LPNT facilities didn't talk about how to best handle this transition.

Well maybe since some of the posters further up this thread seemed to be in the know, they could all just ask him and trump the local paper.

sentinel event said...

Agreed... great point. Maybe someone could invite him to post here.

See, we're not all small-minded victim mentality whiners! :~)

Anonymous said...

I'll give you that one. Granted! :)

sentinel event said...

Your post got me to thinking...

Why not crank this blog up a notch?

The biggest accusation has been that this is a place for anonymous whiners with an axe to grind come here to scribble on the wall.

What if we could convince those in the know to start a dialogue with us here....dispel rumors, answer questions, hear suggestions, etc?

That way, we bypass the filter of the corporate PR machine and the newspaper.

Heck, I'd sign my name to that conversation. Thoughts?

Anonymous said...

It would be the most legitimate move we could make. We would all need to agree to take the good, the bad and the ugly....and swallow 'em all. Name calling should turn into name-signing.

Hmmm...

Good call SE. But, with Lifepoint's background are they capable of telling the truth even if the truth, as they say, will set them free. We are all adults at DRMC, we can handle bad news if it is told to us truthfully. Unfortunately, we usually find out things by rumors and in the newspaper before staff are made aware of changes. And as we have all found out, the rumor mill has more truth to it them what management will tell us.

Anonymous said...

Well SE...so much for your attempt at kicking it up a notch. Management this, management that. Victimization rules.

sentinel event said...

Yup...human nature took over again.

Educated debate is possible. We'll just keep trying.

Anonymous said...

Spoken like a true manager. The above poster was not down playing management. Simply stating that when rumors get started they all passionately deny them unitl the bitter end, then boom, it bounces up and bites them on the butt. Several rumors that they write off as lies have come to be truths. I agree, as adults we can handle the truth. Just be straight with us, good news or bad, we can survive.

Anonymous said...

SE if you want an educated debate then last start one. Post concerns, rumors, and here-say giving each one a separate post and let people speak on the merits of the issue. You have the ability, being the blog master, to remove post that began to bash others and become hateful. I think it is a wonderful idea.

Anonymous said...

Hey folks, Mr. Anderson's dilema is his own fault, not ours or the newspapers. He was interviewed by both and the option to speak the truth was his. His qualifications will speak for themselves, his integrity however has already suffered damage by his own words, not by any comments on here. Hopefully it was a shortsighted blunder on his part and his actions in the future will prove otherwise.

As for the "victim" mentallity so often spoke of on here, it is true some people only look for the negative. But remember we (Danvillians) can only only judge Lifepoint by researching their history before Danville, and judging their actions once they arrived here. You can only beat a dog so many times before he starts to cower everytime you approach. He acts like a victim because he's been treated like one so many times.

And I'll start the transparency....Steve

"Anderson to resign seat
He will leave council when he sells his Martinsville home

Wednesday, July 25, 2007
Martinsville Bulletin

Martinsville City Councilman Mark Anderson on Tuesday notified his fellow council members of his intent to resign.

He did not submit his resignation, however. Instead, he said that he will leave the council when he sells his Martinsville house and all the details of the sale are worked out.

After he finds a buyer for his house, it may take 30 to 45 days to work out details of the sale, he estimated.

Until then, he plans to remain a council member, he indicated.

“As we move forward (in plans to sell the house), I will keep you informed,” Anderson told the council.

He said he gave council members notice of his intent to resign so they could examine the city charter and begin putting together a plan to find his successor.

City Attorney Eric Monday has said that if and when Anderson resigns, the council will have 30 days to appoint someone to fill the remainder of his term, which ends in June 2010.

If that cannot be done, a special election will be held.

Earlier this month, Anderson started a new job as chief financial officer for Danville Regional Medical Center. He previously worked for Memorial Hospital in Martinsville in the same capacity for about five years.

LifePoint Hospitals owns both Memorial and Danville Regional. Its regional president, Jess Judy, told the Martinsville Bulletin on July 18 that LifePoint expects Anderson to move to Danville.

Anderson told the newspaper, however, that he had no plans to move to Danville and that his house in Martinsville was not up for sale “at the moment.”

Danville Regional issued a release the following day quoting Anderson as saying that he and his family look forward to moving to Danville.

“We have a contract on a house here, and we are putting our house on the market in Martinsville. We are planning on having our children attend Danville schools in the fall,” Anderson said in the release.

The release said that Anderson planned to resign from the city council.

He told council members Tuesday that a citizens committee in Danville has recommended that senior executives of Danville Regional live in that city.

Anderson was elected to the council in May 2006 and began serving as a councilman last July."

New CFO is starting off on a great foot at DRMC. He is on a mission to cut the fat from everyone's budget. Told pharmacy that they had to many people working. But, according to pharmacy administration, they are down 5 pharmicist to just bring the staff up to par. Don't you just love it. Which departments are next?

The information posted on this blog is the biggest bunch of lies and rumors I have ever read.
This is the best source of entertainment--like the funny papers! You people are hilarious.

Anonymous said...

If it's so funny call the pharmacy and ask them how hilarious it is ,
the discussion with the pharmacy DID take place and He is touring the facility and saying "people have to go" just like in the "lifepoint corporate structure"
fewer of them = more for the O's".
Learn their history and you will find this is status qou for lifepoint.

I call BS!
No way Anderson is walking around saying people have to go. If he is even thinking it, he wouldn't be walking around saying it. He didn't get where he is by saying stupid things in the halls. You are just trying to stert crap before he even gets a chance to prove himself.
If there is a problem with the pharmacy then the pharmacy director should sit down with him behind closed doors and deal with it.
Give him a chance.

Anonymous said...

Amen Brother or Sister!
From the things I have heard about him, he was well liked and respected at the Martinsville hospital and we should give him a chance to show what he can do to make some positive changes here. Things can only get better, right? It just can't happen overnight.

Anonymous said...

Not everyone was impressed with Mr.Anderson at Martinsville. Perhaps it is due to sour grapes or differences in personality. Perhaps not. He is now at DRMC and it is up to DRMC to decide whether he is an angel or an a......!

As an employee of pharmacy, I say take your BS and stuff it. HE HAS toured pharmacy, HE HAS met with the management team in pharmacy, and HE HAS stated that we have too much staff. You must be one of his lackies that he brought with him from Martinsville.

Anonymous said...

I hope Anderson is touring all departments, looking at all staffing levels and meeting with all management teams.
I don't know much about the pharmacy... How many FTE's? How many are needed?
Is it even possible that maybe, just maybe, the pharmacy is actually overstaffed? Just a question to throw out there.

Anonymous said...

I don't see how. The directors say they are 5 pharmacist down just to break even.

Anonymous said...

I met this guy, I like this guy, and he is real. I think he has good ideas that can benefit DRMC. We need to give him a chance.

Anonymous said...

Yeah he's real or you wouldn't have met him. But ...The others were also. The only difference is this one may know how to "psych" people into thinking something only to get his way which is obviously (from already lying multiple times) the lifepoint way.
There are alot of people already here with good ideas but unless they benefit the "lifepoint way" (ie.bigger bonuses for execs) none will occur. If they listened the director of ICU wouldn't be taking patients on a weekend which could impair a persons ability to do the job during the week from fatigue.
The MD's all run businesses of some kind (or at least understand it )and lifepoint doesn't listen to them and they actually make money.DRMC made money to begin with until the huge salaries were added in for execs (here and Tenn).
