Breathe in, breathe out, move on...

Well, after more years than I care to count, LPNT informed me on Monday that my services are no longer needed.

It's been a good ride....I've worked with some great people who really care about their job, their community, and the patients they serve. To those who have moved on, I wish you the best. To those that are still at DRMC, I wish you the strength to keep working for the patients and their families (you know, neighbor to neighbor).

It's really hard not to write cynical thoughts here about LPNT. But I know that my manager and my co-workers will continue to strive to do their best. I hope that the community stays tuned to what is going on at the hospital and continues to ask the hard questions. Even though someone else owns it, it is still "our" hospital. Those who call the shots in Brentwood will never seek care here so, in my opinion, their vested interest in the place are purely financial (yes, I know that is obvious...so those who are going to type comments just to say "duh", please save the trouble). My hope is that the outlook of the place will eventually change. Keep your fingers crossed on that one.

Thanks to everyone who has posted on this board, and thanks to those who just stopped by to read what's happening. Some posts have been a waste of pixels, but I believe that dialogue took place here that would not have happened otherwise.

I want to go on record again and commend Delegate Danny Marshall for sponsoring the bill about non-profit sales that became law. That effort proves to me that this whole debacle was not just in the imagination of a few. It was a serious event that other communities can learn from.

So, I bid you farewell, adieu, auf wiedersehen, and adios. I'll leave you with some words from that great prophet, Jackson Browne:

"I want to know what became of the changes we waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams of some greater awakening
I've been aware of the time going by, they say in the end it's the wink of an eye
And when the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again.
Amen."

Peace,
Sentinel Event

So many lives destroyed and endangered by the MOST disgraceful corporation that I have ever seen.
Thanks SE for exposing the wretched company to the whole U.S. Maybe one day a reputable NONprofit will rise up and slay the medusa that is lifepoint .
Always use a small "l" in lifepoint.

Thanks SE for the forum, I hope you will still see the need and continue to allow postings. We just endured a dreadful ordeal at lpt that ended with the death of a family member. Granted, their passing was probably inevitable
yet their last days were miserable thanks to lfpt. We documented things well and will present more later. My only advice to anyone would be DO NOT leave a family member alone in that facility. Someone needs to be with them 24/7. Communication is nearly nonexistent between not only staff and family but between staff and physicians and between shifts. Unattended patients are left hungry, wet, soiled, and uncomfortable. I will post details when I can.

BRAVO SE!!!
Please keep this going.
We need to keep things in the public eye.

Dear SE,
Patients may never know what your years of work did for them. You and your co-workers know. We were there. May God bless you as you move on to a new chapter that none of us expected. Others will continue to follow you out the door either willingly or by the message that "services are no longer needed". Bloggers, keep DRMC in your thoughts and prayers. Rumor is that alot of changes have happened to the lab in the past week. Not good ones either. Good people have been lost in the past 2+ years since lifepoint took over. I guess it's the lab's turn now. Wonder how long it will be before DRMC is sold again, people terminated, equipment sold and the building torn down like Dan River Mills.

Anonymous said...

The sooner the hospital is sold or torn down the better.
Moses H. Cone was a bidder when DRMC was destroyed.
Since then Cone has enlarged services and hired workers at Annie Penn (and a lot from DRMC ) and are now building a NEW HOSPITAL in High Point.
Danville could of had that type of community care and professionalism (NON profit). But 5 idiots sold us out for nothing.
Thanks SE for showing , basically the world, how useless lifepoint and for profit hospitals really are . Canada knows it and the U.S. Congress and Senate know it , basically everyone but Danville , until now.

Leaving DRMC was the best decision that I have ever made. I now work for a very reputable company, make 40% more money, pay less for better benefits and work with people that get along and don't have to worry about waiting for the other shoe to drop as did this week in the lab. The most disturbing story that I have heard is that someone was told over the phone that their job was eliminated and that NO ONE from HR was present during the meetings to advise the folks of job elimination and next steps for re-employment, benefits, etc.

Needles now running troubled hospital
Lauren McSherry, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 04/04/2008 10:44:44 PM PDT

Officials in Needles said they have enjoyed a smooth transition this week as the city took control of the Colorado River Medical Center.
LifePoint Hospitals in Brentwood, Tenn., transferred hospital operations to the city at midnight April 1.

LifePoint decided to close the 53-bed medical center after opening a new hospital - Valley View Medical Center - just 12 miles away in Fort Mohave, Ariz.

"It's just a new beginning," said Robert Mannix, the city's former hospital consultant and now the administrator at the medical center. "Everybody I've talked to is happy, smiling. We're feeling pretty optimistic as we go forward."

The City Council voted last month to reject an offer from San Bernardino County to help run the hospital.

Instead, council members decided to strike out on their own.

The county Board of Supervisors offered to give about $1.5 million over three years to pay for outpatient services and a 24-hour urgent-care center.

Council members, however, wanted to keep the hospital fully operational, with in-patient care and a 24-hour emergency room.

Some council members expressed disappointment in the supervisors for not following through on assurances made in 2007 that the county would help the city run the hospital as is.

But the supervisors waited until just days before April 1 to let the city know that a fully operational hospital was not something the county would support.

"If

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
they had told us earlier, we could have made other arrangements," Councilman Roy Mills said. "We could have looked for another vendor. We could have sold the place. We had a lot of options, but we trusted those folks."
Where the city will find the money to operate the hospital, however, remains to be seen.

At least another $1 million to

$2 million is needed to operate the hospital until it begins receiving payments from patient billing, Mills said.

The cost to run the hospital is about $850,000 a month, or $10.2 million annually, Mannix said.

Council members have said they are considering putting a sales-tax increase on the November ballot to help pay for the cost of running the hospital.

Council members also plan to apply for grants and have opted to run the hospital as a nonprofit.

There are differing estimates as to the amount of money LifePoint is paying the city to terminate its lease agreement early.

LifePoint claims the amount is $1.2 million, but council members put the number higher.

Part of the settlement includes money for equipment that was moved to Valley View Medical Center.

After Valley View opened, LifePoint brought in 18-wheelers to cart away everything from X-ray machines to bed pans, Smith said.

All employees were given the opportunity to remain with the hospital under city management, according to a LifePoint news release.

About 99 percent of the staff decided to stay on with the city, Mannix said.

But managers who had been assigned to both hospitals will remain at Valley View, said Lance Ross, now the Valley View spokesman.

Among those is the director of surgery.

Some retired employees have returned to help with the transition, Mills said.

Mannix said plans are to fill those leadership positions internally from existing departments.

Was losing your job because they found out who sentinel event was? they have suspected who for a long time. I heard Ruth say it myself.

The lab underwent major cut backs (just a glorified "lay-off") this past week. The direct result of lifepoint corporate not understanding what it takes to operate a lab in a hospital our size.

All attempts of our lab director (kudos to Peggy Simpson) to show how our lab operates and to explain our potential to generate more money fell on deaf ears as the idiots of lifepoint corporate issued unrealistic staffing standards and ultimatums to meet the standard or be replaced.

Vacated positions will not be filled, all PRN staff were removed from the schedule effective last week, LabCare was down-sized significantly and a 38 year veteran lost his job Monday.

Stay tuned... the ripple effects of these changes will continue for some time.

"There is hope!

Needles now running troubled hospital"

I beg to differ...there may be hope for Needles, but hope here would involve community leadership realizing that there is a problem at DRMC and acting on it. Now that we (the public) have been given a healthy dose of placebo (Citizens Commission and Healthcare Leadership Council), the "news"paper can report that all is well...nothing to see here citizens...move along.

That's just my humble opinion, but I don't think anyone is going to demand action as long as we get an article every three months in the "news"paper stating that the council met and they are happy with the wait time in the ER.

In the absence of real transparency at DRMC, every patient or family member who has a bad experience will think that it is an isolated incident, that it just happened to them. They won't think it is part of a bigger trend due to the lack of a bigger story being told.

Anonymous said...

By the way, I heard that studies have shown that 90% of patients taking the register & bee placebo reported no negative impressions of the DRMC-LPNT marriage.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the post above. It is reported that since Marshall got that bill past all is well in the world. Well, maybe for facilites in the future but that does nothing for the fiasco that has become DRMC. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the bill but the only thing that will get LPNT out is poor returns on their investment. I do not have access to any numbers but just by the looks of things, the business has got to be down. With all the cuts who knows what the profit margin is though.

Cutbacks and layoffs are the first undeniable outwardly visible signs of a "business" in trouble.
The only thing that has kept the helthcare joke of the century(lifepoint) alive is(was) the people that worked there.
They are still dropping like flies as they have since dumbpoint took over.
I just can't say enough about how pitiful of a corporation it is.
I mean to take a "profitable" non-profit and add on the tax and mega salary burden of a paid corporation in the economically depressed area of Danville/South central VA was the DUMBEST thing anyone could have ever done.
The only things more stupid in the last 20 or so years was NAFTA and CAFTA(SAFTA) and you see where that got us (waterfront properties on Dan River) and the highest unemploymentin the U.S.
Good luck to the laid off folks,
work a few years at Moses Cone and when they finally buy it you can transfer back. As if anyone would ever want to come back to danville. I was born here and "the danville way"(good ol boy network) has fought me every step of the way, good riddance.

Anonymous said...

"that got us...the highest unemploymentin the U.S."

Actually, the Danville metro area is only #329 out of 369 MSAs in the US.

http://www.bls.gov/web/laummtrk.htm

The highest rate area in the US has twice the unemployment.

Also, Danville's rate has come down 0.1% since the same period in 2007.

I know, I know, these would be near minimum wage jobs replacing medical professional jobs. But seems to fit with their reasoning.

Personal vs. business use of the BlackBerry...

"Anyone who uses a BlackBerry from Research in Motion (RIMM) or similar type of device knows it’s hard to distinguish between personal usage and business usage, though the IRS and apparently several Congressmen are clearly interested in trying. But judging by this proxy, Lifepoint Hospital’s (LPNT) accounting gurus have figured it out.

In a new disclosure, the company notes that some of the “other benefits” that make up “all other compensation” include “personal use of the individual’s blackberry”. The numbers that Lifepoint lists for this benefit — nearly $65K for CEO and President William F. Carpenter III — make it seem as if the company’s top executives have a bit of an addiction, though to be fair, the footnote also notes that the amounts listed also include “a special one-time payout in connection with the CompanyĆ¢€™s paid time off program”, which we’re certainly hoping is the bulk of the amount listed for Carpenter."

To the anonymous blogger who claims Dr. Talts quit because he did not want to give up his 24 weeks vacation: Codswallop!!
That is the biggest BS I have heard on all of the blog. If you really worked in the OR you would know better. My reason for leaving is not related to giving up vacation (I wish I had 24 weeks!!). Those who really know, understand and commiserate. Please get some FACTS before you bloviate! Or is there some other reason for this post?? Anonymous personal attacks do little to help the hospital or the community.

Umm...where to begin...you don't simply reinvent an economy that has been built on 19th century manufacturing models overnight.

RDU/TRP? Well, they have the slight benefit of having three major research universities in the neighborhood. We now have two universities establishing research facilities here that are already attracting the attention of major industry (ever hear of VW?)

And, since you liked my math so much...in the same time that Danville MSA's unemployment has improved by 0.1%, the unemployment rate in RDU has worsened by 0.5%.

Raleigh is the fastest growing city? Not even in the top 10.

There are a couple of simple solution for your issues with your current city of residence. It's called highways 29, 58 and 86. And the good news is that you only have to move 50 miles away to RDU/RTP to be in the Promised Land.

If you choose to stay, PU or SU.

Many surgeons and staff have been discussing this, I am just repeating what they are saying. What is the real reason Dr. Talts is leaving then? According to Dr. Talts? If it really is him responding! Since everyone presumes to know why people are leaving, what is the real truth? I guess we will never know! What do we believe? I do agree that a 19th century econ can't be fixed overnight but until the ugly children of ugly parents that have kept danville down so long are gone, it will remain down.
50 miles +/- "RDU/TRP? Well, they have the slight benefit of having three major research universities in the neighborhood." The overflow should help with the 4 major roads coming into Danville.
But there is no benefit.
those areas at one time not so long ago were as small as Danville.

Most Averett grads don't stay.and for good reason.
And as for the invite to leave ,Done!!!
It's attitudes like that that make native born danvillians like me want to leave even quicker, take a trip and you'll see why.

And by the way including DLSC and DFD and DRMC I've probably helped more people and waded through more blood and death than you've ever seen.
I've already PU so how about you SU.

"Many surgeons and staff have been discussing this, I am just repeating what they are saying. What is the real reason Dr. Talts is leaving then?"

Maybe YOU shouldn't repeat things that you hear unless you KNOW them to be the truth. You definitely shouldn't post something on the internet "that you heard" unless you know it to be the truth. To ask a question is one thing to post an unverified statement like "Dr Talts quit because he didn't want to give up his 24 weeks of vacation every year." is reckless and stupid.
You should also realize people might leave for personal reasons to which you have no business knowing. If they leave because they are fed up with lfpt., most with any professionalism wouldn't bother to reveal that.

Before finishing, I might add that IF you were paying attention to ALL the "Many surgeons and staff have been discussing this" you would know the way everyone associated with the pain clinic has been treated and realize that in itself would be enough to make them want to leave.

You ask "What is the real reason Dr. Talts is leaving then?"
Grow up, grow a spine, and ask the man. While you're at it since having it out in the public is so impotant to you ask him for permission to post.

Finally spend your working hours listening more to your supervisor, patients, and patients family and less time listening to "Many surgeons and staff have been discussing this". Your patients and the hospital will be better off for it.

Actually staying here to work through the changes that need to be done to replace Dan River and the old mill job so that there are advanced jobs, university degree programs, economic diversity, etc. etc. etc - check, check, check, check

Traveled most of the US, Canada, and Europe to see some different perspectives other than the southern VA mill town mentality - check

Maybe we should work together on something here...sounds like we are both fed up enough to actually make something happen here.

I have traveled throughout the US, Canada and Europe. I have lived in major cities along the East coast. I have worked for Fortune 500 and international companies. I have worked on projects with other hospitals. However, I have never, never seen a more poorly managed company than lpnt - which is a direct effect of their very poor management group. When a company allows people like Ruth to move throughout their organization, wreaking havoc at each location to which she is assigned, then the company is doomed to fail.

Was the sale of the hospital a bad idea? No. Was the sale of the hospital to lpnt a bad idea? Absolutely. It is sad to see current state of the hospital and its employees. Most are terrified of losing their jobs. And, most are not in a position to pick up and move to another city for work.

The hospital and its employees have fallen into such a deep pit of dispair, that they may never fully recover. It is no longer an employer or healthcare provider of choice in this region, but it is the one of last resort.

"Panel: Danville Regional making progress"
Danville Register & Bee
April 11, 2008

Officials with the Healthcare Leadership Council have decided to disband and turn oversight concerns at Danville Regional Medical Center over to the board of trustees.
“Considering the progress made by DRMC over the past year, along with changes in leadership of the DRMC Board of Trustees and Executive team, the time has come to pass the baton,” Don Nodtvedt, chairman of the council, said in a prepared statement. “It has become apparent to the HLC that these new leaders have assumed full responsibility for making improvements in the hospital.”
Nodtvedt said the council and the hospital have worked together to make improvements at Danville Regional during the past year.
Danville Regional is fully accredited by the Joint Commission and improvements have been made in staffing and recruitment at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, he said.
A complaint resolution response procedure has been in place for patients who use hospital services.
Procedures to improve Danville Regional’s emergency room service are being implemented and the hope is the board of trustees will monitor these changes, Nodtvedt said.
“There is an improved working relationship and growing trust between administration and the medical staff,” he said.
Danville Regional’s capital investment of more than $25 million (including the improvements to the fifth and sixth floor, the purchase of a new 64-slice CT scanner and the purchase of a state-of-the-art linear accelerator used for cancer treatment) are evidence of its commitment to expanding the quality and scope of medical services to the community, Nodtvedt said.
Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Chairman Coy Harville, however, said these items were part of the purchase agreements involved in the July 2005 sale of the hospital to LifePoint Hospitals Inc.
Nodtvedt also pointed to the continuation of a cardiac surgery services agreement with Duke Private Diagnostic Clinic as an example of the hospital’s commitment to patient care.
“Much has been done in the recent months,” he said. “Congratulations to Danville Regional for their progress.
“While proud of their progress, Danville Regional and the hospital’s board of trustees acknowledge the challenges that still lay ahead to make Danville’s Primary Health Care Provider an even greater asset in the region’s economic growth and quality of life.”
Harville said the leadership council has done all it can, but it is up to LifePoint to follow through.
“It’s in LifePoint’s hands,” he said Thursday.
The Healthcare Leadership Council was formed in mid-2007 by former Danville Mayor Wayne Williams, Harville and Caswell County (N.C.) Board of Commissioners Chairman George Ward.

Nope. I am too. Actually I'm p)##&%. Expletives left out.
This just goes to show the corruption and STUPIDITY of this area and especially the City and the (long line of expletives)idiots at the (lifepoint)newspaper and the sorry /pathetic hospital.I still know people in ICU and things ARE NOT better almost all travelers and down to 6 (SIX) heart RNs for 24-7 coverage. It was THREE TIMES that before lifepoint. Lab - decimated. staffing - gone. Ratios still 1:3 ICU and much higher on the floors.
Even as other states enact minimum staffing LAWS, unethical corporations like lifepoint still insist on risking our lives to make a few people rich.!!!!!
Oh won't someone with "name recognition" write in to the paper or tv news and rebutt these LIES.

Anonymous said...

To say things are better is a joke. Wait times might be better, patient care IS NOT. We just had a family member there and care was pitiful at best, neglectful most times. The list is long but will be presented at the proper time. Here's a few to make a point:
Sheets and covers found urine soaked. Why? because instead of a catheter or depends, bath towels were rolled up and strategically placed between their legs.
Meals were brought in and if a family member wasn't present, sat out of reach of the patient until the next meal was brought. Get this, with a huge NPO sign on the door, meals were brought in and left (some visitors (who didn't know better) even attempted to feed the patient without being questioned or stopped by staff)
Hospitalists that rotated off must have had little or no communication with the ones rotating on since tests were duplicated, questions were asked repeatedly, WRONG meds.were given etc.
The list goes on, but things are not better.

Exactly,Give it time It's been days and no one has been able to come up with ONE single expanded service.

As long as Lifepoint and Humphreys are running the show, the services will get worse causing more layoffs as people go elsewhere. This hospital has many competent people working for an incompetent ass. Until this situation is corrected the level of care at DRMC will only get worse. The CEO is non-responsive to complaints (figures they will just go away if ignored). Check out http://ousthumphreysdrmc.blogspot.com/

Wow...he must really be something to get his very own blog dedicated to his ouster...I'm impressed.

The CNO doesn't return calls or e-mails either, even after 3 weeks and return calls and e-mails.

Hey Mikey...not much action on your attempt at a blog. Maybe you shuld just stick with regular complaining on this blog. :)

Still 0 comments Mikey. Not many folks jumping onto your team.

So who is this mikey person? hmm.... me thinks someone who is either posting a fake name or is no longer with drmc and is trying to bring everyone else down with him/her!! So Mike, who are you??

Yeah right, and who are you to think that the CNO has nothing better to do than to return calls to every single person that calls or emails!! Reality check here. You may want to make AN APPOINTMENT to discuss your concerns, if you can take the heat and go face to face! Always easier to remain anonmymous and send an email or call to complain!!

Ok Smart***
I've Tried to make an appointment with her (secretary) 7 times she never returns the call for an appointment and never has any openings.
Know what you're talking about before you spout off.

And to this day...still no comments on his attempt at a blog. Give it up and go away.

Well mr mike jarmin, why would you post a fake name.? Trying to make sure you get your points accross? In my mind you loose even more credibility than someone who posts anonymously!!

1st of all you don't know me.
2nd of a fool who doesn't know the war at hand is a fool destined to lose .

If you're too stupid to see how poorly run the whole of lifepoint is you are indeed a pitiful fool.
You can only muster a "you, you , you" comment ? Poor stupid fool.
