"Health Care Consultant Hired"

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

DANVILLE - A health care consultant has been hired to look into the concerns plaguing Danville Regional Medical Center.
The Citizen’s Committee Related to the Danville Regional Medical Center gave the name of the consultant to Danville City Council on Tuesday night.
Jim Houser of the citizen’s committee said his group has hired Keith Pryor with Philadelphia-based Health Strategies and Solutions Inc. to help evaluate Danville Regional’s quality of care since it was sold to Lifepoint Hospitals Inc. in July 2005.
“We have found the person who would best fit our needs,” said Houser, co-chairman of the committee. “From this point we need to ask the question - where do we go from here?”
Houser said Pryor has a lot of experience helping public not-for-profit hospitals transition to private ownership. Houser said the committee members would have a chance to meet with Pryor at their next meeting, which will be held at 5:15 p.m. today in the Municipal Building.

Houser said he expects the group’s public forums to take place soon but would not give any information about when exactly the meetings would happen. He also defended a decision to remove a link from the committee’s Web site that would let people view the comments people had posted about the hospital’s current state.
Houser said the committee did this because it did not want one person’s comments to affect what another person may post. He said a few other people would not post comments because they were afraid someone else might see what they had written.

What?
Could someone please explain this line of reasoning to me?

So, I guess the newspaper shouldn't write a story about the hospital because it may influence someone who can't think for themself.

Better yet, maybe we shouldn't talk to each other because I might be influenced by what you say.

My apologies to everyone who read this comment and had their mind changed. Very sorry about that...

I hear that CMS dropped in to DRMC today unannounced.

Actually removing the ability to view other posts is probably a good thing. If you were viewing the posts you might be inclined not to post something if you saw several other people saying the same thing. This way if I post about a problem and no one sees it they might post also. In other words, if they get 100 people saying "management will not listen to our suggestions" it will have a LOT more impact than if 10 people posted it and the other 90 decided it had been said enough already.

So how does that enable one to see if you are contributing something new? For many, if it appears the information will disappear into a vacuum, they will be less inclined to participate.
Besides, the issue is that archives of previous comments were deleted. How is that relevant? How can we know what IS, and IS NOT, being said.
Apathy and silence is not something we need now.

Maybe it's just me, but Houser's explanation didn't translate well into English.

One possible explaination is a situation called : mob mentality
People will do or say things regardless of whether or not they would normally when in a group.
And true if more complaints are registered truely anonymously then there is more weight .But , we also need regular feedback on our comments , Hmmmm.
Just a thought .
It's still just a 'take from the worker give to the rich' deal going on at DRMC.Very dangerous for worker and patient.

Maybe what the commission is hoping for is "original", "truthful" comments...not a bunch of me too's or people reading posts and echoing them even though they have no clue what they are talking about. If you have something to post to the commission do so (hence no apathy or silence) If you have a legitimate issue it shouldn't matter a bit what someone else might say.
P.S. If you will remember the commission was established to look into current issues at lifepoint NOT into the original sale of the hospital and by the second day there was a post on there with BOYCOTT THE BOYS AT THE BANK!
BOYCOTT THE BOYS AT THE BANK!
BOYCOTT THE BOYS AT THE BANK!
BOYCOTT THE BOYS AT THE BANK!
Everyone in the country could read those posts (lifepoint people as well as danville citizens)
Maybe just maybe Mr. Houser was trying to make the people from the hospital's complaints and concerns look more legitimate and less like a bunch of vidictive people trying to bring down the boys at the bank. This wasn't the forum for that. Just look at the direction the "rumors" posts took.

By the way, I made the post 2 up from this one. I certainly think the boys at the bank need to be held accountable. I just think the 2 issues should be kept seperate in most instances. Hospital operations and the underhanded sale of the hospital each contain enough emotion that they don't need to be mixed...that is until we have an opportunity for the "bank gang" to step up and return the hospital to some sort of non-profit status.
