"Regional foundation begins health assessment"

Star Tribune
Friday, August 24, 2007 8:10 AM EDT

DANVILLE - Danville Regional Foundation is conducting a formal assessment of the health of Danville, Pittsylvania and Caswell counties to use as a guide in developing strategies to improve the overall health of the community."One of our four areas of focus is health and wellness," said Karl Stauber, chief executive officer of the foundation. "We want to contribute to producing healthy people in healthy communities.
"To accomplish that goal, we begin by identifying the key health issues and learn where we stand as a community," said Stauber. "When we have collected the data and when we have the benefit of the opinions of the community, then the Foundation can consider long-term strategic action to address health issues."The foundation needs "to have an accurate and comprehensive picture of the community's health status, as well as ideas on how we can best utilize our resources," said Stauber."We take the snapshot by reaching out to the community to collect and analyze information, and that is what we expect to have from this assessment," he continued. The assessment is also intended to identify individuals and organizations interested in addressing health issues and trends.
A team from the Office of Rural and Community Health of East Tennessee State University will conduct the assessment, which will include interviews with individuals, discussions with health-related organizations and meetings with groups that represent a cross-section of the community. The health assessment will be completed in approximately 90 days. The foundation also will be conducting two additional assessments, one on education and workforce development capacity and the second on economic and community development.Danville Regional Foundation was established following the sale of Danville Regional Medical Center to LifePoint Hospitals Inc. for $210 million in 2005.In its two years, the foundation has announced grants of approximately $17.5 million to five not-for-profit organizations and governing agencies in Danville, Pittsylvania and Caswell counties. The new community center under construction on Main Street in Chatham was funded with a $3 million grant from the foundation.

At least the hospital foundation is consistent.

First the Boys at the Bank sold their souls and sold us down the river by turning our hospital over to an out-of-state outfit that has ruined it. Then, since the Bank Boys did not know what to do with the money, they hired an out-of-state consultant to decide who they needed to hire. Then they hired an out-of-state head-hunter to find that person, who turns out to be Stauber from Minnesota. Soon as Stauber gets on board, he hires an out-of-state crowd to come in and figure out what he wants to know about our health.

The only thing "local" in this deal is the money behind it--which is ours. All the rest are just the games these people who do not work love to play for entertainment.

I am so tired of the contempt these people have for all of us. They are certain we are idiots who need to have people from out of state take care of us. It is such a disgrace for this community.

Will we ever get rid of these people? Will true leadership ever emerge in our lifetimes?

Sly guy, this Stauber. He's gonna toss some money to healthcare before dumping the lionshare into the Institute. Wonder if he thought of that on his own?

I believe the MD's that have treated Danville for decades would have amassed more info than some out of state college will in a short time.
As far as using E Tenn Stat Univ.
That is so infuriating I can't even comment.................

lifepoint/HCA is undoubtedly the most unscrupulous, unethical ,immoral corporation ever imagined.

Anonymous said...

But Remember We need to give them more Chances!

Anonymous said...

Yes, it is enraging that this guy would pick some hick school in Tennessee. And to ignore the wealth of local and regional expertise on this matter is unconscionable. The clear message to us is that we are seen as boobs and idiots. It is enraging that these people have taken our money and are using it to play games with our lives.

And never forget, this Stauber is a nobody but a pawn for the Bank Boys. This is how they see us, how they have always treated our community.

And always will.

Could not agree with you more. Why not use UVA or VA Tech's public health and enviromental sciences departments? They may not be here in Danville, but at least they are in Virginia. Secondly, VCU/MCV has one of the most highly respected public health schools in the nation. I personally feel they would have been an excellent choice to conduct the study.

Anonymous said...

UVA, TECH, ODU,VCU,
any one of which would have been much more agreeable and beneficial.
Oh wait aren't we outpost #2 a brentwood subdivision playground.

Anonymous said...

This is great news and a much needed assessment. Should have happened YEARS ago . I don't give a damn about what geographic location the assessing school is from. It is the statistics / information we need to have gathered which matters. STOP all the negativity about the smallest of GOOD things.

Anonymous said...

I agree. I am so sorry folks but you are not the upmost experts of the problems or even how to do an assessment. Why not bring in a group who has done this before. And our physicians should be questioned, as should many other disciplines healthcare and none. if you left the assessment to the MDs they would listen to no others then themselves.why are you so hesitant to have "outsiders" help you?

Anonymous said...

The bread and butter of consulting rests with the fact that "locals" never know as much as "outsiders". You can even find THAT in the bible. :)

Anonymous said...

There is a lot of truth to the fact that outsiders will have an un-biased view....If we were overlooking a local group it would be one thing, but this money is leaving the community; whether it goes to Tenn. or Richmond shouldn't make a difference.

Anonymous said...

To the poster who wrote: "why are you so hesitant to have "outsiders" help you?"

Just a few reasons for being hesitant about outsiders:

1) LifePoint Hospital, and all the incompetence and misery we have seen from them;

2) An out-of-town money-sucker masquerading as a newspaper;

3) The Institute, sucking up our public money and operated by outsiders for outsiders.

The list can go on and on, and if this is news to you, well, you need to take more fish oil.

Anonymous said...

Also, the chronic use of outsiders is to continue bashing those of us who are well educated and live here as being unworthy and incompetent. Clearly you care nothing sbout the self-esteem of the area. It's an awful situation.

Anonymous said...

Stop the presses!

We use "insiders" all over the place. Ben davenoport picks up virtually all Danville's garbage and makes a fortune; Fred Blair, another Bank Boy, does much of the building at the Institute; Barkhouser sells cars locally. Bob Ashby sucks in profits from the radio station and his shrink business.

This list can go on and on, too.

Danville does plenty of business with local folks. Get your facts straight.

Anonymous said...

"Also, the chronic use of outsiders is to continue bashing those of us who are well educated and live here as being unworthy and incompetent. Clearly you care nothing sbout the self-esteem of the area. It's an awful situation."

So are YOU qualified to complete a commuity assessment?

Anonymous said...

The reason that outsiders are hired in is to kiss the banks boys butts. Most of us now know what their games are and the bank boys want someone who will do their bidding. I don't know of any self-respecting people here who wants to get in the "INstitute" bedroom with them. There is no fool like an outsider fool.

Anonymous said...

"There is a lot of truth to the fact that outsiders will have an un-biased view."
Lifepoint - from Tenn.
E Tenn.State - from Tenn.
Yeah that's really unbiased.

And actually yes we are qualified to do a comm. assessment-
Degreed RN's(BSN and MSN and PhD)
Degreed Doctors( who are the authorities on healthcare in a region ) have Medical and surgical degrees(specialties.)
And professional insurance reps. who know the costs, all of the aforementioned VA colleges (all rank higher than E Tenn.)
That's the problem with Danville today to many consultants not enough professionals.
Oh and did I forget over 100 years of Danville health trends on record, that would take forever for Tenn to aquaint themselves with.
Oh wait this isn't about health , it's about Tenn funding their state with danville insurance and medicaid/medicaire and the retirement for the millionaires club in Brentwood.

This is, without a doubt the most laughable set of postings yet. Thanks SE for the comic relief you've brought to your readers.
So let's see....you really think there's a stealth connection between LPNT and ETSU?
You think that the public health depts. of VA universities cared enough to conduct the assessemnt...then why haven't they already done it?
You think that all outsiders are satan incarnate?
And that they are beinng used to intentionally demean local folks?

I'm holding my ribs...bwaahaaahhaaa

An assessment of the communities health? This is nothing new - it has been done for years by a department within the hospital. But of course, the documents were never used by 'upper management'. The document was the Environmental Assessment. So, why are we using an outside firm to tell us what we already know? The three leading causes of death in the area: Heart Disease, Cancer and COPD. We didn't lose the talent that put this together. Like all other things, it fell through the cracks and has been forgotten.

There is , they're both in Tenn. and that's even more money that Danville and surrounding areas will lose and receive NO BENEFIT FROM, but you'd have to understand economics and business to understand that, and you clearly don't . I guess you were too busy laughing during class or you've never had a class .

Anonymous said...

So you're convinced that the Tennessee mafia is real?

Anonymous said...

No of course not , just that lifepoint has no real concern in this area and it's residents , their business practices are suspect and their reputation horrible, and their judgements for business are extremely ill conceived.

Anonymous said...

Then why would you say there's a stealth connection between ETSU and LPNT. The respective efforts couldn't be any more non-connected.
Paranoia rules in Danville USA!!!

Please read again.
More local monies going to other communities and not benefitting us.

I think the poster doing the laughing is the new pr clown in town who's writing the sugar letters for the paper.

Anonymous said...

agreed

Anonymous said...

Nope...just a sensible (local) soul who stares in amazement at some of the comments, thinking "are these folks serious or is this blog the only thing that occupies their time and energy?"

Anonymous said...

I am so glad that in your world everything is peaches and cream. The employees here have been lied to, talked down upon, and worked like dogs for the past two years that we are fed up with outside consultants telling us how to run our lives and do our jobs.

Anonymous said...

I said I'd never post on this out of fear of being discovered, but you got it right. LAUGHER is one who has never tasted the indignities of living under the thumbs of Danville's bosses and certainly has never had to endure the workplace infection Lifepoint has brought to our hospital. LAUGHER is living in his own world and no doubt might grow up someday
to find a seat at the table of the oppressors.

Anonymous said...

Why does the Bank Boys foundation hire people from Tennessee to assess our health? I just can't understand it. Do they give a reason? Is it simply to insult all of us???

If they have given a reason, I really would like to know what i9t is.

Anonymous said...

I never thought I would think this but socialized medicine would be better than for profit medical care. Maybe when Hillary brings it on Lifepoint and all others like them will lose BIG.

Anonymous said...

So everyone from Tennessee is connected to Lifepoint? Well that is certainly a logical conclusion! So when I buy the latest nashville produced CD..they are connected to LifePoint. Do you wonder why they think we are all idiots?

I hate it when people make comments without knowing that of which they speak. For your information: East Tennessee State Ranked third in the nation for excellence in rural medicine education by U.S. News & World Report in its "America's Best Graduate Schools" 2007 edition.
You are just one of those people that think that because it is of the south it is stupid. That is so insulting!

Lifepoint 2.3 Billion dollar co.
ETSU a state FUNDED college
ECSU gets money from TENN funds derived from DANVILLE healthcare
Danville and VIRGINIA colleges will receive NO money from the same income, DUH
Like the post above said grow a brain and then take an econ class and then you'll understand why this is such an insult to have ECSU
tell us how to run instead of a VA college ALL of which rank in the top 10 always .VCU has been #1 for decades.

Anonymous said...

All the ECSU's should be ETSU's but you're right.

Anonymous said...

I wish someone would ask the Danville Regional Foundation. I would, but I happen to work for one of the bank boys. I would think they would give some reason fr hiring ETSU over our superior Virginia possibilities.

Anonymous said...

Isn't it better to let this one go?

Believe me, I can understand your hatred of the bank guys and your frustration with their tactics, but they have WON. It's over. It could well be that they reached for more non-Virginians as another insulting slap at all of us. I don't know that, of course, but we all know that these men are ruthless and care about absolutely nothing except themselves and their pet projects. We know and understand their contempt, so why on earth do you keep wasting time complaining about it?

It's time to move on and try to support what we have. Those guys have done enough damage already.

Anonymous said...

True. They won. We lost. It's time to move on. It's not hard to get along with them. Just do what you do there way.

Anonymous said...

They (bank boys) have not won. Their egos still suffer from public distain, disrespect and the public knowledge that they are failures as humanitarians. The truth has come out, they are not businessmen. They are bullies. The only way they win is if everybody starts kissing their -sses again.

Anonymous said...

But do you think they care about what the public thinks of them? If they cared, how could they have done to us what they have done in so many ways?

I just don't get it.

Anonymous said...

Of course they care. As greedy people, they want it all--money, subservience and the love of everyone.

Anonymous said...

The bank boys are legends in their own minds. They have not won when they go out in public and people won't shake their hands, don't grovel over them, don't praise them and just over all ignore them! These type people think they are God's gifts to the community and to mankind. If we turn our backs on them and quit buying their bull----, we win.

Anonymous said...

The best way is don't do business with anything they have a connection too. I have pulled my money out of the bank refuse to by any ford parts localy an so on. It's not much but I fell better. If we all did this I'm sure we would have there ear.

Anonymous said...

All the people in my family have quit banking with American National. It's not much, but it's the least we can do.

Anonymous said...

You know what this is like? People feel like rape victims--violated, helpless, hopeless. It is very hard to keep any self-esteem when you see this at every turn.

Anonymous said...

You need to stop in and see your friendly shrink, Dr. Bob Ashby! He can fix you right up. Give him a try. To know him is to love him.

Anonymous said...

God help us, to have people making such fun of what is happening to us.

Anonymous said...

Has anybody noticed how dirty and worn the hospital is, maybe the boyz from the bank can take turns taking out the trash, cause thats what they are.....

Anonymous said...

I don't think dirty is the right word.....Filthy seems to fit better.. Who is in charge of that department?

Anonymous said...

They spit polished the place like crazy during the inspections. Now things are returning back to normal. No staff to clean the hospital and no grounds keeping staff to clean up all the weeds in the flower beds. Looks disgracful. Everything was nicely groomed before all the staff cuts.

Anonymous said...

No No ! what I'm told the staff in the cleaning department is to busy reiseing money for the habitat house when most of them don't on their own home. They are threaned every day with their jobs if they don't help raise money for this project, Ms Yeates the department leader is to busy raiseing money and kissing the big wheels butts to take care of thre people in her department, she could have heired two aides which they do need, but she hired one of her family friends instead as group leader. The aides still don't have enough help . She needs other group leader to take money and food to her daughter in law who works at the hospital, the times shes not on the phone talking with her. So the cakes she makes and the lies she tells the fat rats at life point keeps her in her job. Don't belive me ask some of her employee if you can fine one that is not afead of being fired by ms yeates.

Anonymous said...

Or maybe they are to busy cleaning a house for upper management like they did for Tod Lambert.

Anonymous said...

that would be misappropriation of assets if they're on company time.

Anonymous said...

They were made to go clean his house (on company time) when he and his wife came back from China with their newly adopted baby. Environmental services were told that they were helping out because both of them would be too tired to clean the house and take care of a new baby and, also, being out of the country for a month would be very tiring on them.

Anonymous said...

you are wrong housekeeping did clean Lambert's house but they were paid. The VP that investgated this should me a copy of all the recipets they were paid the check where the supplies were paid and the payroll showing all the people were off from the hospital thatday. So before you idiots make a statment make sure you know what you are talking about.

Anonymous said...

If Jo ann Yates (housekeeping) is a department head I'm a brain surgern

Anonymous said...

Well, this idiot was working for housekeeping that day and I was made to go over and clean. Get YOUR facts straight.

Anonymous said...

Well hello Dr. Singer.

Anonymous said...

I had a family member in the hospital and their room was never clean while they was there. Someone on second shift did come in and empty the 3 day old trash. We did not see anyone from housekeeping while we were there....

Anonymous said...

"Well, this idiot was working for housekeeping that day and I was made to go over and clean. Get YOUR facts straight. "

YOU SHOULD contact the VA Employment Commission or the State directly That is HIGHLY ILLEGAL.

Anonymous said...

Only illegal if they didn't get paid. Not seeing evidence of that.

Anonymous said...

It is illegal for a company to pay a worker to work on the facility and then mandate that they go to an employees PRIVATE home and do work on money appropriated for that facility.

Would be the equivalent Dan River electrician going over to a Dan River Director's house and doing electrical work while being paid to work in the facility- ILLEGAL City Managers have been busted on this in the past.

And yes DRI isn't really here anymore .

Anonymous said...

OK Perry Mason/Matlock/Name-your-local-attorney....looks like you've done your share of case review. Again...what business is it of yours? Seems like you're much more willing to stick your nose where it doesn't belong vs. be a part of a constructive dialogue about how we can all make things better. Seems to be a pretty consistent theme.

Anonymous said...

I think the poster meant we work for a dishonest corp. and we do.

Anonymous said...

OK Einstein...but didn't the issue of housekeepers cleaning an executive's house happen before the LPNT aquisition. Oops, you slid in your own crap again!

Anonymous said...

No it did not "crap boy". Tod Lambert was the first CEO that Lifepoint brought in to run the hospital. Please, if you must criticize, get your facts straight.

Anonymous said...

Jeez...what makes you think I'm male?

Anonymous said...

Still not illegal if they're gettin paid.

Anonymous said...

Because I don't here many women saying crap, that's usually a guy thing.

Anonymous said...

I turned this case of Tod's house cleaning and yard work in to the Compliance Hot Line as an ethics issue. It was investigated by an outside firm and on the inside by Will Isemann. At that time, a check was issued for the supplies by tod. The people were already on the clock when they went to Forest Hills. What was illegal was the fact that these employees were not given a choice and they were threatened with their jobs if they told anyone. Will soon after lost his job and then the person who threatened them eventually lost his. And this did happen during LIFEPOINT time. And so did many other shady events.

Anonymous said...

Sorry you don't know what you are talking about...Someone has given you the wrong infomation. That's not what got Wil fired, Wil got, Wil fired I guess you are one of thse misinformed idiots. Grow up.

Anonymous said...

Wil went crazy with power while Tod was in China. He tried to fire all the people he did not like and change rules at a whim. That is what got Wil fired.
Of course Tod paid for the cleaning supplies AFTER he was investigated by the ethics department. A lot of honest things can happen when ones butt is in a sling.

Anonymous said...

Go back and read what I wrote, I did not say Will was fired for this, I said he was fired. This misinformed idiot has the findings from the investigation, all he had to do was investigate whether they were paid and if supplies were paid for or not. They were not, so he had to see that they were paid for by tod. The above poster sounds like a lifepoint person. Oh, by the way, Lifepoint never owned up to the threats, they put that on hk's supervisor.

Anonymous said...

If we are talking about idiots being fired, what has happened to Kim Grossman? He has to be around here somewhere since his wife still works as a nurse practitoner in Danville.

Anonymous said...

Mandated Cleaning oa private residence while on company time and being payed by said company from company funds is misappropriation and is illegal.

Anonymous said...

Kim Grossman is attending nurse practioner school while his wife supports him. It's a scarey thought!
