Good news alert

Danville Regional labs earn full accreditation
Danville Register & Bee
Friday, July 13, 2007

DANVILLE - All four clinical laboratories of Danville Regional Medical Center have earned full accreditation from the College of American Pathologists.
“This means we meet the standards that have been set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid,” Dr. Thomas Hardy, medical director of the labs, said Thursday. “We need to be accredited by an agency that has standards equal to or greater than those.”
The labs are inspected every two years by a team of up to 10 people, Hardy said, noting that the labs have always earned the accreditation.
“They come and look at our procedures, quality control and manuals, as well as the instruments, facilities and employee qualifications,” he said. “They have a checklist of thousands of standards.”
The four clinical labs, including the main laboratory, open heart, respiratory therapy and point-of-care labs, conduct approximately 1 million tests per year, according to a hospital news release.
“The fact that we earn accreditation means that we met or exceeded the standards and patients can be confident that their lab results are accurate and dependable,” Hardy said.
All of the laboratory technicians have a degree in clinical lab science and are certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the news release stated.
“The people we have working in the lab are very dedicated, professional individuals who care deeply about patients and patient care,” Hardy said. “Many of them have been here for a long time and they all take great pride in their work.”
The labs are accredited through peer review by other accredited labs. Technologists from Danville Regional will evaluate other labs to determine their compliance with the College of American Pathologists’ standards.
The College of American Pathologists is a medical society that serves almost 16,000 physician members and laboratories throughout the world.

Does this mean that if you have to go to the DRMC as a patient, be sure to get a bed in one of the labs?

Anonymous said...

I think that's about what it means....Is this one of the secret places that failed the Joint Commission report?

Anonymous said...

News is normally something that is out of the ordinary. It's sad that PASSING an inspection that has previously been passed over and over is now news in our community.

That observation aside ... Great job, lab folks. As I recall you all maintained personal standards high enough that even a drop would have placed you above the bar.

Great good news!!!!!!

Everyone reading this woke up breathing this morning.

Same thing.

"News is normally something that is out of the ordinary. It's sad that PASSING an inspection that has previously been passed over and over is now news in our community."

Point well taken, but I also don't want to continue with the impression that nothing good is ever said about DRMC on this blog. Management issues aside, there are still a lot of our friends and neighbors there working hard to do a good job. Whenever those stories are news, I want to make sure that everyone can read the good stuff along with the bad.

Go Lab!!

Anonymous said...

SE is exactly right, BUT he/she is also right to leave room for ridiculing the dog-bites-man abgle in this. I would only add that the lab folks must be truly extraordinary to hold up under powerful negative influences of LifePoint.

I hope this approval doesn't make them angry in Brentwood--I can just see the suits raising hell that they had better do something about this lab that obviously is surviving and prevailing when you could cut things back and get more money.

Anonymous said...

Ok, let me get this straight. You people are being critical of the fact the Lab passed their CAP survey? This is an extremely stringent process required of all labs and is more strict than JCAHO. The Joint Commission accepts CAP surveys as gold. Our lab is spectacular in maintaining standards and efficiencies and Peggy Simpson and her staff are very much committed to quality. So instead of celebrating success and giving a thumbs up to the people committed to quality you are criticising the fact that because they have always passed this survey it is of no value? come on, you constantly put the hospital down for it's short comings and you can not objectively view the successes and you are so critical of good people doing a good job.

sentinel event said...

Oh well...so much for starting the day with good news.

You guys are going to prove our critics right.

Work with me here.

Anonymous said...

Hats off to the lab staffs. Still heavy hitters on a once-mighty club, relegated to cellar status only because of front-office collapse. (A little baseball lingo there.)

Anonymous said...

The lab staff accomplishments are excellent! You have to give "hats off" to a team who can jump hurdles and go the extra miles to manuever towards the ultimate goal of quality as they try to survive Lifepoint's game of twister! This is quite a group of ethical and talented folks!

Lifepoint's Corporate Ownership, Directorship, Management, Leadership and its investors should learn a few things from them.

Joint Commission and American Politics should learn a few things from them.

The true professionals in the lab have kept their eye on their goal, which is to provide EFFECTIVE QUALITY SERVICE in an area that is vital to the health and safety of the people they serve! And they've done it amidst huge obstacles! The lab staff is indeed trully special! Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

(Surely Lifepoint is giving them a nice raise, aren't they? I mean, it'll result in more than just their picture in the paper and slicing some cake, won't it?)

Anonymous said...

Congrats lab folk!! I have worked in several different hospitals and you guys are by far the best of the best!!

Anonymous said...

Lifepoint could even give a little stock certificate to Peggy, and boost morale.

Hey bank boys, this could be a little open door to a road of redemption for you too. How about a Foundation Check for Acheivement? Could be an opportunity for you to show your goodwill and give a little back.
Course.....you will have to find the guts to do it, publicly, for it to be trully effective in boosting morale for the community.
Choice is yours though......just a thought.

Anonymous said...

None of this seems hyper-critical. These people did a wonderful job in spite of LifePoint.

Question: Is there anyone out there who wants to state that the lab got this good rating BECAUSE of anything LifePoint did?

Let's hear it.

Anonymous said...

I gather the lab people have had to fight tooth and nail to maintain their standards under LifePoint. God bless them, every one!

Anonymous said...

That's nonsense. It is ridiculous to paint LifePoint with such a broad brush. They do want things to work. These business people could be in all sorts of unsavory lines of work, but they have been attracted to the hospital business because they care about people. Let's give them the credit they deserve.

Anonymous said...

Comment regarding July 13 at 7:05, "...attracted to the hospital business because they care about people..." --

But their management said their business model has been an attraction to "low hanging fruit."

Anonymous said...

If you are in this to help people you don't cut every service and destroy the very foundation of a community .Lifepoint only cares about money , and they ARE still handing out warnings for any opinions that aren't " we love Lifepoint " any opossition to their strongarm tactics gets you a "warning".

Anonymous said...

A serious question: Is LifePoint's culture one in which no one in the home office cares about helping people? Are they really in this ourely because it is a profit model they think can be successful? Or do some of the people get into it because thyey care about medical matters. (I am not talking about the good people who work here--only the Suits in Brentwood.)

Anonymous said...

In my opinion, the MAIN reason the Suits, as you call them, go into the business is money. But I think they like telling their friends that they care about people. Nothting wrong with that.

Anonymous said...

WHAT!?!?!? Of course they are in it for the money--all of them: docs, nurses, administrators. Ever heard of a little American system called Capitalism? May have some drawbacks, as has oft been said, but it's the best thing in all of history for the most people.

Anonymous said...

However, if the "capitalist venture" historically shows that it pays itself-over and above what it re-invests into the future well-being of its business market-such as services (and the quality of them), then it becomes a "weak-est link" compared to its own industry and within the capital structure of America. Many times you see this if one of the corporate structures is planning to dissolve or become absorbed by another corporation.

Anonymous said...

Truly, some of the best services in America were not built by deceitful monopolies either.

To state it more correctly, the very backbone and strength of America was built on a fair and free enterprise system. Lifepoint does not represent a fair and free enterprise system at all. In all that has gotten "published" perhaps, but not in reality. Lifepoint's history, integrity, and foundation is quite shaded and in direct conflict to everything that America was built on. This is fact.

Anonymous said...

Really? The Railroads? Big Oil? Big Coal? Big Steel. The enterprise may have been "free," but too often the labor was, too, or very close to it.

Anonymous said...

As one of the members of the lab staff, I want to acknowledge the great people who work there and the other people in the hospital who help us be successful in caring for the patients. CAP standards are tough. This inspection team sent to us was very thorough to the smallest detail. They did not miss checking a single "dotted i" or "crossed t". As far as Lifepoint goes, we are definitely dealing with difficult times. Lack of stability in Admininstration, numerous hurdles to cross when trying to get anything done, short staffing, loss of outreach business, increasing rules and regulations from the government and a information system that is a good 10-20 behind the time in meeting our needs. Unlike nursing, there are fewer job opportunities in our community. Danville is our home. We will continue as long as we can to support our community the best way we know how with what little we have-continue doing our jobs processing the right specimen from the right patient at the right time using the right testing 24/7. When the last patient is stuck, the last CBC run, the last unit of RBCs crossmatched, the last maintenance done on the Lx, the last donor given juice, the last pap read, the last outpatient registered, the last plate struck, the last tissue cut and the last urine dipped, remember to document who cut the lights off.

Anonymous said...

What a magnificent statement. Thank you, and God bless you every one.

unionnurse said...

Very well said, hats off to the lab.

Anonymous said...

I am a nurse and I am NOT in it for the money! When I started nursing I started at $5.89 an hour. Nursing is a dirty and very physical job. You try wiping dirty butts, packing decubitus, exposing yourself constantly to infectious diseases, and constantly lifting 200, 300 , 400 + pound people and see how much money you think it is worth. I am not there for money!

Anonymous said...

Well, tell us why you are there?

Anonymous said...

How are all those new nurses doing so far?

Anonymous said...

I went into nursing because I want to help people, not because I wanted to make a huge pile of money. That never crossed my mind. The new grads are doing well. They are a good bunch. It will take them a while to become seasoned nurses though.

Anonymous said...

I sure believe you. The urge to be a nurse is something very special and wonderful. Where would this world be without such people. I do wonder why there seems to be such a shortage.....that could be a very bad sign of where people's heads are these days.

Anonymous said...

I'm no longer working there. Do you think the housekeeping staff is doing a better job than they were, say, nine-ten months ago?

Anonymous said...

I was just looking down a hallway last week at the baseboard and how clean they are. I have never thought our hospital is dirty. I have been to other hospital such as Duke and ours is much cleaner and has always been.

Anonymous said...

To answer the original question, yes I think that the hospital is a little cleaner now but I don't think it has to do with you. I think they got to add some staff back where Lifepoint made them delete staff earlier.

"....And then unions were created to protect working Americans. Another voice, a necessary balance at that time- which consequently, allowed the goals to be achieved through roads of mediation, negotiation, communication, and teamwork."
Most unions are successful unless their leadership becomes corrupt, and many are still very successful and active today. Much of America's infrastructure has become successful with the assistance of unions. They could have easily colapsed without them.
Of course, imperative in the balance would be something all Americans deserve....A voting system of integrity.

Anonymous said...

Unions would be magnificent if you did not have to have people running them.. It's those nasty little human failings like greed and arrogance that ruin them and the good they might do.

A question about the Bank Boys.

We all know they sold the hospital to get play money for their pet projects and to line heir own pockets. One of Ben Davenport's most profitable ideas is to put a $3 million community center in front of his own office building in Chatham.

Work started, and long-time residents of Chatham knew that he was putting the new building on a site filled with 75 years of used motor oil. It was clear he would get a fat contract to clean up the site, in addition to all the other benefits he would realize.

Now that work has stopped on the site, the reports are that the contractor has "struck oil" and will now have to hire Davenport to clean the site up.

How can we find out real facts about this? I have called the Environmental Protection Agency but it is nearly impossible to get through to a human being.

Does anyone know the details of this?

Anonymous said...

Greed corrupts and $200 million worth of greed corrupts absolutely.

Anonymous said...

I live in Chatham and if you want to know all the facts, pay a visit to Pat's Place on Main Street. Folks there are mad as hell about what Mr. Davenport is doing to Chatham and to Danville. He even brought in these people recently and bragged about how they were going to make him a bundle by what they would pay him to tear down Long Mill for the materials.

As for his ridiculous community center, the folks at Pat's have been pointing out for months that there's a virtual oil well under the site. The common belief is that he is doing this so that when the community center is closed down in several years because of the usual reasons, he will pick up the $3 million and use it for his own headquarters.

If you want to know what's going on with Big D as they call him, drop into Pat's Place. The guy's greatest pleasure is in bragging, and the biggest score of his life was selling off our hospital!

Anonymous said...

Pat's Place is Chatham's VC. All the scoop.

Anonymous said...

The EPA? He paid them off long ago.

Anonymous said...

You guys are making this man a legend in his own time!

Anonymous said...

Not really. Those who know him say he is a legend in his own mind.

Anonymous said...

Pat's Place. Is that the one downhill from the streetcar diner? I remember it as a true smoke filled room!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Pat's Place is downhill. But the diner is closed and gone from the streetcar. Drugstore closed this summer. Tire place closed this summer. Downtown Chatham is downhill.

Anonymous said...

Chatham is fast becoming as big a dump as Danville. It will really be a dump when Ben gets his community center built.

Yes, Pat's is the one filled with smmoke and grease.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like he is destroying Chatham like "Don's" is destroying that little part of the county in south Danville it's on a Haz-mat dump too.... it's already blown up once......

A new Blog has arrived. http://blog.preservedanville.com/

Another issue weaving its threads into the Hospital issue is that of the fate of the Long Mill. Ben Davenport and partners not only had a legal obligation not to tear down the mill, but it has recently been uncovered that they have been actively seeking to do so despite that obligation. In fact, they requested the Maintenance Code inspection that led to the City's Demolition Order. The City appears complicit, throwing up their hands and saying that this is a private matter, yet it is the City's own Order that has put this demolition into effect. Just like with the Hospital, the powers that be and the City all think we are all stupid and won't notice. Perhaps we are not so stupid that we will re-elect these people who care more about the "boys at the bank" than the people who actually live here.

I think it's a "recycling center" (junkyard) built in a residential neighborhood in south danville.

The new preservationist blog has nice archives of important information, but you have to give your name to post. Only a fool or a millionaire would post his name in this stinking town. You could get your knees broken. Too bad. We need a blog for presrvation, but this one will not draw comments from us regular people.

Anonymous said...

There seem to be several tragedies at hand. Connected? Maybe somebody can explain the Chatham comments. Been in and out of there for decades. Family ties and property. Thought I'd retire there. But it's gone from great little place to a rust belt feel. Sidewalks empty. Overall industrial-smelly and noisy. Big trucks ripping and snorting through most of the time. What is it with the place? I've backed off.

Anonymous said...

Very nice blog! DRMC needs all the scrutiny it can get. I can tell you, the place is off the track, despite the tremendous efforts by some individuals.
Thanks for this, very much.

Anonymous said...

More than a few believe the connective tissue is the Davenport family. As for leadership in Chatham, go meet Mayor Haley. You will have a better understanding. He also is paid by the Davenports to count the plate at the Chatham Baptist Church.

Anonymous said...

Retire to Chatham? Try Myrtle Beach.

Anonymous said...

Everybody from Chatham and Danville is in Myrtle Beach this week anyway, except for Sentinel Event, who sez he wishes he wuz there.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of Ben Davenport and the beach, rumor in Chatham has it that the couple he recently hired as associate pastors at his church are leaving already, going to Virginia Beach. Seem like very nice folks. Hope they're OK.

Anonymous said...

Please come on back to Chatham, retirement person. We need you. The current problems, well, it's just a phase we're going through.

But the hospital has to get straightened out. Until Danville Regional is back on track, the Danville region is not a safe retirement area.

Anonymous said...

These guys, the Bank Boys, wreck whatever they touch.

Davenport and his pastor to whom he has entrusted the $3 million community center have run off the associate pastors they hired. Very nice people. But of course old timers are streaming out of that church also.

I loved one of your comments, that Davenport is the connective tissue between the destruction of Danville Regional and the scandal in Chatham of putting the $3 million in front of his office.

Anonymous said...

I'll warn you again. The Bank Boys are going to start breaking knees if you keep this up.

Talking about Davenport and the beach... we ran into a guy on the Outer Banks recently who came from Chatham. He said he just had to move away because of Davenport's corruption. Couldn't stand to live in the same town anymore.
Speaking of corruption, some folks from New Jersey came down this way and said they knew of Davenport up there -- he has a reputation for his "Portland footwear." That's cement.

Anonymous said...

Let's face it. The Bums at the Bank run Danville (into the ground). City Manager Jerry Gwaltney does their bidding. The City Council sits around waiting for Jerry to tell them what to think, what to say and how to act.
It's time to rid ourselves of all this mess. It's time for open and more transparent government.
Time to change our government from this ridiculous "at large" one (that disinfranchises much of the population and leaves City Council accountable to no one -- except the bank bums). Maybe then Danvillians will have a voice in what happens to their city, their hospital, and their heritage.

Anonymous said...

Yall being way to hard on Davenport. Those others like Majors, Ashby and them, they just as brutal and will bust your chops and theyr so sneaky you never know who got you. They work from the back, like the cowards and bullies they are. Yall better watch it.

Smoke and mirrors for decades. The destruction of DRMC is just the most obvious example to date.
Danville et. Al has truly been victimized even by it's own state ,No matter how much is generated in Danville , it always seems to end up in Richmond and Northern VA. Except for what our hometown "leaders" can manage to get into their own accounts.

Be sure to look at the latest letters produced by the LifePoint PR department in the Danville newspaper. The paper is running them in return for getting the ads back. What a bunch of spread-leg whores.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, those letters praising the hospital, are praising what should be the "norm" not the exception. When receiving the proper care warrants a letter to the editor it reveals how much we have lowered our expectations.

Anonymous said...

The PR department is not writing the letters. Patients and families are. You comment that it is sad that normal expectations require a letter of praise. That is not so. These individuals are writing because they are seeing good, safe, quality healthcare and are tired of the constant negative that this community produces. So if are to read the negative ones and accept them at face value.. you need to also read the positive ones and accept them at face value. If you always look for negative...you will always find negative. We need to celebrate the progress and successes and we need to recognize those at the hospital who work hard and contribute to a quality product.

Gee! Wonder which LifePoint guru wrote that last comment?

I understand that our City Manager, Mr. Gwaltney is recovering from a recent surgery. I wonder, did he have it done at DRMC and give Lifepoint an opportunity to show him how well they are running our hospital, or did he go out of town to have it done?

The answer to that question would certainly tell Danville how much confidence their City leaders have in the organization.

Anonymous said...

Great catch! This is a public issue question. Let's all send an email to the mayor's office and ask the question....

Anderson takes job in Danville

Councilman says he has no plans now to leave city
Thursday, July 19, 2007

By MICKEY POWELL - Bulletin Staff Writer

Martinsville City Councilman Mark Anderson has taken a job in Danville and although his employer said he expects him to move there, Anderson said he has no plans to leave Martinsville or the city council at this time.

If he does move to Danville, he will have to resign from the council because he no longer would be a Martinsville resident, according to City Attorney Eric Monday.

Anderson said Wednesday night that he became chief financial officer at Danville Regional Medical Center effective July 2. He had been chief financial officer for Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

Jess Judy, regional president for LifePoint Hospitals, confirmed that Wednesday. Both the Martinsville and Danville hospitals are owned and operated by LifePoint.

Judy said that Anderson planned to announce himself that he now is working in Danville.

Being on the city council, he said, obviously its a very sensitive issue for him.

Judy told Danville City Council during its July 3 meeting that Anderson was becoming Danville Regionals chief financial officer, minutes of the meeting obtained via the Internet show.

If its in the minutes (of the Danville council meeting) ... I would take that as a fact, Judy said.

He said he introduced Anderson to the Danville council during that meeting as Danville Regionals new CFO.

Our preference, Judy said, referring to LifePoint, is for all of our hospital executives to move to the community where they work.

So Anderson would be expected to move to Danville, he added.

But Anderson said he has no plans at this time to move to Danville. When asked if his house is for sale, he replied, not at the moment. When asked if his children are enrolled in schools in Martinsville or Danville, he said, I havent decided that yet.

Those are decisions I have to make. As long as Im a resident of Martinsville, my kids will go to school there and I will serve on council, and if anything changes Ill notify you, Anderson added.

Anderson has served on the Martinsville City Council since last July. He was elected to a four-year term in May 2006.

Vice Mayor James Clark said that everybody needs to take care of their career. I cant blame him (for going to Danville) if it was an upward promotion.

Anderson has brought financial expertise to the council that other members do not have, Clark said.

He has been very conservative in his budget expectations ... and pressed hard for streamlining city finances, added Clark.

If a vacancy occurs on the city council, council members will have to appoint someone to fill the remainder of his term ending in June 2010, according to Monday.

In terms of how they would go about it (making an appointment), it would be entirely up to them, Monday said of the council.

The council would have 30 days from the time the vacancy occurred to do that, he said. If the council members cannot do that within 30 days or cannot agree on a new council member, a special election would be held. That election could not be held within 60 days of a general or primary election, Monday added.

Clark said the council will have to talk it over if a vacancy occurs.

I have no earthly idea who would want to fill Andersons seat, Clark added.

Clark said, though, he would recommend that the council first look at appointing a former council member.

LifePoint has not yet started the process of finding a replacement for Anderson at Memorial, Judy said

Anonymous said...

Go to LifePoint's website. Get the cities where they have "hospitals." Google those cities to get the names of newspapers. Pick a few names to send the blog to on the newaspaper. Then go to yellow pages and look for docs in each of the cities, and a few of them will have a web presence of some sort. EMail this site to each one. Just explain that we are all worried about the danger the people and communities are in.

Doesn't matter if a number of us do it. More the better.

Groups of people are easier to get lists for....like age ranges, or associations of people...such as teachers......students..., groups of insured people....but the larger the lists, the more expensive. You can also many times get annual salary ranges and cut the list down. Just decide on "which hanging fruit" is your best target market and how your message could be multiplied from those contacts. (All those e-mail chain letters could be doin' some little expense marketing) There are also many blogs that people can post invitations on. My Space...etc. the list is endless.

God Bless You All for Your Overwhelming Compassion for Others!

Hospital names new CFO

By SUSAN ELZEY

DANVILLE - Danville Regional Medical Center has a new chief financial officer.

Mark T. Anderson has been CFO of the hospital since July 2. For the past five years, he has held that same office at the LifePoint Hospitals Inc.-owned Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Anderson is a Martinsville city councilman and will resign from that post to relocate to Danville.

He said in a news release that he and his family - wife Lisa and children Jordan, Brian and Melissa - are looking forward to moving to Danville.

“We have a contract on a house here, and we are putting our house on the market in Martinsville,” Anderson said Thursday. “We are planning on having our children attend Danville schools in the fall.”

Anderson said he does not know yet if he will seek political office in Danville.

“I enjoy politics, but my focus will be to work with the physicians, my administrative peers and associates to provide quality health care services in Danville,” Anderson said.

“We look forward to the expertise and nearly 20 years of experience that Mark brings to this position,” Ruth McDaniel, interim CEO for the hospital, said in the release. “He has a proven track record and our associates are already benefiting from his leadership.”

That poster calling us trailer sleaze....that's clearly one of the Bank Boys writing in, right down to his illiteracy.

So in the Martinsville paper he's not leaving Martinsville and in the Danville paper he is leaving Martinsville .....spinning already.

Who believes any of it? First thing Doloresco said was that his family was coming to Danville. You guys make such a mistake believing anything these people say.

So what happened to Flinn. I heard it was discovered he got fired from his last job in Florida and that now he's not coming to Danville.

Yeah, article states that the associates are already benefitting from the new CFO. I have not got anything from him. However, ask the folks in the business office that got fired and the ones from Martinsville he brought with him. That must be what Ruth meant by employees already benefitting, Martinsville people got jobs to help with their unemployment issues. The spin just gets better and better.

E-mail accounts can be set up that do not give information about identity. Many people enjoy hitting the forward button to groups of people.
If people were to highlight the https address, copy and post it on an e-mail to their friends(you might want to note the topic you found most interesting or had mentioned to them over the phone etc) and ask them to forward it to all who it could help, could help get the word out. (Might want to get it into some government offices, chamber of commerce national org., celebrity sights who speak on talk shows) etc. Just a thought. Should do it soon though, before viruses get on board for a free ride.

Poor, poor Anderson. Looks like Ceaser sent him to the lion's den, while they eat larger steaks.

Maybe he is a lion tamer.

I haven't been home in a couple of years, and this blog is the first positive sign I can remember that shows people might be doing some thinking for themselves. Pretty amazing, really. For those critical about anonymous postings, keep in mind that people around here have NEVER spoken out before. This is a new phenomenon. Let folks get comfortable with this, and slowly they may gain the courage to speak for attribution. This is a great sign for the future, as the reigning idiots tear down our heritage buildings and wreck our hospital.

And maybe he just doesn't quite fit Lifepoint's mold exactly, and his buddies pulled the ultimate shift on him. One, two, three, everybody roll!

Besides, even lion tamers just get a few scratches usually, and perhaps a little chunk bitten out of their..........but he'll live,
and then it's just one, two, three, everybody roll again....until you get to fatty and skinny....and then fatty is the only one who continues rolling.

So, did the Martinsville Bulletin get it right on Thursday or Friday??? Is Fridays article a retraction of Thursdays?

Councilman will resign, employer says

Friday, July 20, 2007

By MICKEY POWELL - Bulletin Staff Writer

Mark Anderson does plan to resign his seat on the Martinsville City Council and move to Danville, his new employer announced Thursday.

Anderson “is planning on resigning from that post (city council) as a result of his relocation plans to the city of Danville,” stated a news release from Danville Regional Medical Center, where he now is chief financial officer.

“My family (wife Lisa, sons Jordan, Brian and daughter Melissa) are looking forward to making the move to Danville,” Anderson stated in the release. “We have a contract on a house here, and we are putting our house on the market in Martinsville. We are planning on having our children attend Danville schools in the fall.”

On Wednesday, Anderson told the Martinsville Bulletin that he had no plans to leave Martinsville — or the city council — at this time.

When a reporter asked if his Martinsville house is for sale, he said, “not at the moment.” When the reporter asked Anderson if his children are enrolled in schools in Martinsville or Danville, he replied, “I haven’t decided that yet.”

Anderson could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Anderson was chief financial officer for Memorial Hospital in Martinsville for five years. He has been at Danville Regional since July 2, the release said.

He has served on the Martinsville City Council since last July, having been elected in May 2006.

If Anderson resigns from the council, it will have 30 days to appoint someone to fill the remainder of his term ending in June 2010, according to City Attorney Eric Monday.

If the council members cannot do that within 30 days or cannot agree on a new council member, a special election would be held. That election could not be held within 60 days of a general or primary election, Monday added.

It's not a retraction. It's good reporting. These goons at LifePoint can't get their stories straight, and the paper is doing a nice job of straight reporting....just reporting what they say. It shows them to be the liars we know them to be.

I know something about the people you are dealing with, and they will not stop until they have wrecked everything you hold dear. There is not a shred of honesty in any of them, (That does NOT suggest that you have plenty of fine people working at DRMC, but in the end they will all be gone.)

Who believes this guy will move to Danville? That's exactly what Doloresco promised. I heard him say it several times. Not a word of truth in it. And these so-called leaders we have know damn well what the facts are.

Anonymous said...

OK, Martinsville paper reported he wasn't moving. Once that hit the street there was an article in the Danville paper saying he was....could be damage control and once the Martinsville article hit he got a call saying "You will be moving to Danville, now call the paper there and get the word out".

Anonymous said...

Or it could be, as is more likely,he is as lifepoint apparantly trains all of their "execs"....a liar and spinmaster.

Anonymous said...

Well, at least if he doesn't move to Danville, his commute home is only 30 minutes. I hear that Doloresco would take partial days off to start his commute back to the west coast.

Anonymous said...

Why would anyone want to move their family to Danville, given how we "welcome" outsiders. Haven't seen anyone applaud teh fact that we have a guy that is a public service volunteer. Nope...it's badmouthing from teh get-go. And remember, its CFO not CGO (Chief Give-away Officer) that so many would like to see.

We all know that CFO is not set up to give away resources. All we are asking is for enough staff to SAFELY take care of patients. You do not make a profit by slashing staff and cutting programs. Search any of the major medical or nursing research magazines and you can to your hearts content of all the studies that disprove the practice that less staff equals more profits.

Thats why you have a "group" of "O's" running any business...the bean counters (CFO's) usually work strictly off of numbers. So to them cutting staff DOES equal increased profits. It's up to the other managers to convince him that keeping staff will improve FUTURE profits. The "team" weighs the options and as a group they decide the right course. Thats why all "O's" need to be strong, and capable of making a legitimate argument for expenditures.

Medicine and the provision there of is not a cut and dried expenditure venture. You cannot "bean count" services and justifying every expense as it comes along in a dynamic environment is futile.Accounting as a science is not so pigeon holed that it cannot allow for leeway and "occurences" there is an entire section of accounting for that.
"So to them cutting staff DOES equal increased profits."
Only the most ignorant accountant (if in fact the new CFO has any accounting background at all)would believe this in a service environment. The fruition of the industry is SERVICE not products.
Products can easily be set into LIFO FIFO and just in time inventory. Unpredictable medical situations cannot. They can however be assigned expected packages of services ie. ACS,respiratory failures, cardiac arrests, caths, etc. of course these are not perfect but it's better than understaffing and hoping nothing happens by playing the odds. Don't be fooled the accountants know exactly what they're doing and it's to generate as much money for as few people as possible and do it as close to legal as they can ,(remember Enron and Arthur Anderson)

You poor paranoid, uneducated saps. Clearly you get your opinion from the very best of TV shows and supermarket tabloids. It's a shame you can't speak more intelligibly about these very important topics. The last CFO I ever served on a senior leadership team had both compassion and talent. He ran things by the book...a very tight ship. And, oh by the way, I saw him take 12 angels from our hospital's Angel Tree and return with shiny new bicycles for 12 lucky kids. and he did it after hours so he could remain anonymous. Quit being so judgemental.

Anonymous said...

You're judged by your group, Enron ,Arthur Anderson, Halliburton, on and on and on, CEO's CFO's et Al. The state of the USA is caused by corporate greed , all of the above O's and other types have caused the majority of the destruction of the economy by sheer greed, thousands cannot support 2 or 3 when the 2 or 3 make more than the thousands .
As for the bikes good for the kids but how many families went without bikes because of the job loss or loss of work time to pay his million dollar salary?
Oh and by the way, know your audience, your calling people who are VERY educated in multiple fields saps .....be careful you poor fool.

Anonymous said...

Oh by the way, sap, ...he made 95K....not very close to million. and your bike comments should sicken anyone who reads your pitiful paranoid posting.

Anonymous said...

"You're judged by your group"
The poster that said this is right, more people do more good than any one person attempting to placate a few to cover his big salary. "Million dollar salary" is a metaphor, the emperor made millions while Martinsville burned,he is already looking for jobs to cut to fund his stock. You don't think he will receive a huge bonus for coming to DRMC,be real. The stock options and bonuses alone are way more than what you state and it also makes us question the legitimacy of your post ,how do you know the salary are you "in".
Also communities that prosper do far more for children than anyone person. "It takes a village to raise a child not a poor misguided fool"
