"Danville Regional claims patient count stable"

Register Bee - August 7, 2008

The head of Danville Regional Medical Center said Thursday that, despite rumors, there has not been a significant decline in daily patient counts at the hospital and no job losses related to patient counts.
“That’s not true at all,” Jerel Humphrey, Danville Regional’s chief executive officer, said. “But we can’t control what people say.”
Daily patient counts remain stable for this time of year, he said, noting there has been a slight decrease in 2006-08.
Humphrey said patient numbers are well above 100 a day. While the summer season may bring smaller patient counts, it’s the opposite during the winter when more people are sick.
“We’re more than busy,” he said.
Humphrey added that at no time are hospital layoffs tied to patient count number. He said 13 non-clinical jobs were eliminated in July and that these employees were offered other jobs at the hospital, which employs about 1,400 people.
“We move people around and give them new opportunities,” he said.
The hospital has recruited more than seven new physicians and 60 new nurses. Danville Regional did that by eliminating agency nurses, which are health care providers known as traveling nurses who can help fill understaffed shifts.
“What we’re seeing is nothing out of the ordinary,” Humphrey said.

To all current employees- Didn't Lifepoint state "profits" of tens of millions of dollars this past quarter from DRMC? I heard this from an employee and find it unbelievable give the dramatic drop in procedures and physicians. Inpatient medical admits usually cost hospitals money. If Lifepoint can squeeze a little lemonade out of such lemons I can't imagine how much money they could have made if they would not have screwed up so badly!

Life point is as stable as the Titanic was.

Humphrey is a liar.

"there has not been a significant decline in daily patient counts at the hospital and no job losses related to patient counts."

Outright Lie. He just said the travel nurses were gone and I know FOR A FACT that the positions have NOT been filled.

“But we can’t control what people say.”
Lie number 2 - he obviously has been manipulating the press.

"Daily patient counts remain stable for this time of year, he said, noting there has been a slight decrease in 2006-08."

Lie number 3- It cannot decrease and stay the same(stable).

"Humphrey said patient numbers are well above 100 a day."
When it was DRMC it was closer to 200-250 a day.

“We’re more than busy,” he said.

Should've said :The nurses and staff are more than busy since they've cut staffing to nothing
All the while Humphrey sits on his %^$ and draws a big check producing nothing and nothing tangible in action.

LIE- 4 "Humphrey added that at no time are hospital layoffs tied to patient count number."

Reassignment pool take it or leave it.
" He said 13 non-clinical jobs were eliminated in July and that these employees were offered other jobs at the hospital", which employs about 1,400 people.
“We move people around and give them new opportunities,”

Sounds like the reassignment /layoff pool again.

Ok watch out for this He contradicted himself so many times here : "The hospital has recruited more than seven new physicians and 60 new nurses."
They recruited low quality (or inexperienced )hospitalists who are looking to pay off loans quickly and there are not "60 new nurses" these are nurses that they are trying to fill the holes with at a lower wage than travel nurses receive, that's good, but they ran off far more than that to start with and the average "new" nurse lasts about 90 days in Danville.

Danville Regional did that by eliminating agency nurses", which are health care providers known as traveling nurses who can help fill understaffed shifts.
Contradiction- Humphrey has stated more than once that "all shifts were adequately staffed" I haven't seen one in DRMC since lifepoint took over.
“What we’re seeing is nothing out of the ordinary,” Humphrey said.
Not out of the ordinary for lifepoint and the idiots that run it.

"Didn't Lifepoint state "profits" of tens of millions of dollars this past quarter from DRMC"

If you'll read the Forbes article and the conference call in general you'll see that lifepoint lost money on all of it's "large" hospitals and since DRMC is (was)the largest notice it tanked badly.

How the h*ll could lifepoint show "tens of millions" of profit on such a sorry little operation like DRMC?

Hey Mikey...nice long blog of not saying much...welcome back!

Anonymous said...

You can make the numbers saying just about anything. Knifepoint is not going to say anything negitive.
Like most big companies they will bend the truth to tell you what they think you should here. After all I have herd an seen I will never go to them. I will also direct as many away from them as possable.

There was a meeting for the employees and they were told that DRMC had a profit last quarter. Anyone attend that meeting?

"welcome back Mikey"

Did you even read the post?
Whoever wrote the long post agreed that lifepoint is lying and couldn't have made a profit...
What's your obsession with this Mikey ? do they need a restraining order as you are clearly obsessed...

WELCOME BACK SENTINAL EVENT. I MISSED YOU.

I disagree with portions of the above long post.
I work at the hospital, and yes there are new doctors-no they are not all hospitalists and yes they are very good doctors to work with.
Dr.Embry is a wonderful, friendly and compassionate heart surgeon.
Dr.Ackers is also very good. I have not worked personally with some of the other ones, but hear that they are also good.
I am happy that we are finally getting rid of some of those agency nurses, don't be so critical about hiring new nurses. Yes, they are new and not all that experienced, but common now, don't we have to give our new grads a chance? Have you yourself never been new to a job. Give them some time to get their feet wet instead of criticizing, at least we are getting some local people. 90 days? I don't know who you spoke with about that, but I am working with some new nurses that have been here longer than that!
Hospital stays have been declining over the last 5 years, nothing new with that, expecially in the summer. Add to that less and less people with insurance and people who need hospitalization are in and out quickly.
I'm not really an advocate of national health care, but things are getting worse. I feel so sorry about some of my patients, they worry constantly about how they are going to pay for medical care. Their prescriptions alone sometimes can be more than their paychecks(if they even work).
A lot of danvillians don't do a very good job of taking care of themselves. Look at all the smokers and overweight people around here. Lots of people with high blood pressure, diabetes, which doesn't help when you are trying to recover from illness or surgery.

"the 90 days" comes with experience , you'll see...
Alot of what you see as good physicians are not nearly the level of the physicians that have gone. Again experience.Good luck in lifepoint , don't let them hang you with an unsafe assignment that you may be unaware, I hope you learn before it gets you.

To the idiot obsessed with Mikey, this is Mikey and my first post in over a month. I do appreciate the comment though, I thought the long anti-Humphreys post was well written.

Dude...chill. Not obsessed at all, just tired of your repetitive, mind numbing "Humphrey's a jerk" posts with a fake name. Make a point. Thanks Mikey.

According to www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov our DRMC is below average on heart patient mortalities. 11.1% survival vs. a national average of 15.5%. Only 29% of patients given discharge instructions (for those fortunate enough to survive). And to think they believe nothing is wrong....

The other Lifepoint hospital in Martinsville has the honor of being the WORST one in the nation for cardiac survival! Danville is probably catching up with all the senior people being let go in favor of brand new grads.

For anyone still trumpeting the horn for lifepoint- read above. Practically everyone in the U.S. agrees that lifepoint run facilities are pathetic.

For those of you who have not read todays paper, the front page is worth reading. Sad shape DRMC is in.

Anonymous said...

By the way naming someone without absolute proof is libel...
Since you are "saying" it and writing it: libel and slander...

Anonymous said...

You mean sad shape lifepoint is in...DRMC died a few years ago at the hand of a "for-profit" and 5 greedy, ignorant, fools...

I stand corrected.....

If able to determine what the IP number of the person is or if the vocal person spreads it publicly - yes...it's happened before.

That is not all true about summer census, as explained by JEREL. The system I went to work for had to open the overflow units 3 times in August (we are talking around 900 beds total). Census good elsewhere....

Anonymous said...

Yep, trauma, respiratory, and sepsis in the summer.
Cardiac, respiratory, and OD in the winter...census goes down in unfit hospitals run by unfit hospitals.
Jerel either has no clue(probable) or obviously is lying and has no clue( more likely)

DRMC is doctoring records to protect themselves, proof to come shortly. CEO lying, but that's OK, what he did was recorded and will become public soon.

To the poster claiming DRMC is "doctoring records"
As said in the previous post although different person,

" naming someone without absolute proof is libel...
Since you are "saying" it and writing it: libel and slander..."

Be very careful about your accusations.........

Virginia Defamation Law

Elements of Defamation
In Virginia, the elements of a defamation claim are publication of an actionable statement with
the requisite fault on the part of the defendant.

To be “actionable,” the statement must be a false statement of fact that harms the plaintiff's reputation in the community or deters other persons from associating with him or her. These elements of a defamation claim in Virginia are similar to the elements discussed in the general Defamation Law section, with the following exceptions:
Defamation Per Se

Virginia recognizes that certain statements constitute defamation per se. These statements are so egregious that they will always be considered defamatory and are assumed to harm the plaintiff's reputation, without further need to prove that harm. In Virginia, a statement that does any of the following things amounts to defamation per se:

attributes to the plaintiff the commission of some criminal offense involving moral turpitude, for which the party, if the charge is true, may be indicted and punished;
indicates that the plaintiff is infected with a contagious disease;
attributes to the plaintiff unfitness to perform the duties of an office or employment of profit, or lack of integrity in the discharge of the duties of such an office or employment; or
hurts the plaintiff in his or her profession or trade.

Defamation - I am showing proof to the State. It is fact, no libel involved. Records that were altered to cover screw-ups at DRMC. No libel, no slander, just illegal alterations of medical records. Fortunately, I have the documentation needed to prove this as fact. This hospital is in very bad shape operationally and financially and they know it. How long can they try to hide this fact? How much do they lose everyday? We do not have a capable person to lead and Lifepoint has no capable people. More to come.

Any else heard they closed 2a due to low census?

That means fresh post op ORTHO cases will go to floors with renal and pulmonary patients (can you say chronic infected patients in same area as fresh post op patients????)
