Danville Regional CEO gets 18-month check up

Register & Bee Published: May 9, 2009

Jerel Humphrey, CEO of Danville Regional Medical Center, took time last week to reflect on what has been accomplished at the hospital during the almost 18 months he has been at the helm.
Humphrey, most often seen without a tie and wearing a sweater vest, laughs and jokes easily, but quickly turns serious when talking about what has transpired for the good and what still needs to be done at the hospital since its purchase by LifePoint Hospitals Inc. four years ago.
In a January 2008 interview with the Danville Register & Bee three months into his tenure, Humphrey said the hospital was still putting its executive team together. He said Tuesday that had been accomplished.
“We’ve now had a year-plus of an administration team working together,” he said. “We have rounded out our team and have Becky Logan as our chief nursing officer and Mark Anderson as our chief financial officer. Eric Barber has been added as a chief operating officer, and our chief medical officer is Tim Starling, a past president of the medical staff, as well as having served 32 years as a nephrologist with the Danville Urology Clinic. Frank Campbell has become the chairman of the board.”
Another area that has become more focused in the past year has been community outreach. Although the hospital has “sporadically” helped with community organizations in the past, Humphrey said this past year the hospital has tried to be more consistent with it.
“(Recently) we’ve done fundraising with the Free Clinic of Danville, signed a contract with PATHS and worked with Salvation Army,” he said.
Other community organizations that have been supported by Danville Regional through sponsorships and donations include Habitat for Humanity, the Free Clinic of Danville, the Boy Scouts, Special Olympics, the Langhorne House, the Danville Life Saving Crew and the YMCA, among many others.
The hospital’s 2008 Community Benefit Report reveals it has spent $21 million on charity care and bad debt; $172.1 million on government-sponsored health care (Medicare and Medicaid); $705,104 in community benefit programs ($35,820 in financial contributions, $94,585 in health professionals education and $574,699 in physician recruitment); and $896,000 in state taxes, $224,000 in local sales tax and $832,000 in property taxes.
Recalling the initial theme for his leadership as building trust with the community, Humphrey said he has made himself available and given talks to several community groups.
“The feedback has been that people appreciate open communication, our recommitment to the community and our recruitment efforts to bring in new physicians,” he said.
In the past year, 12 new physicians have been recruited, a process that can be lengthy.
“We identify people who want to come and then we have to get them properly credentialed to be on our medical staff and then sign any agreements involved,” Humphrey said, adding with a laugh, “And then they have to come.”
The number of physicians leaving the area has “trickled,” he said.
The hospital has received nothing but good comments about the re-affiliation of the Duke Heart Center with the hospital’s Heart Center of the Piedmont at Danville Regional Medical Center for the hospital’s cardiovascular services, according to Humphrey.
“The agreements with Duke are fully signed, and Dr. Richard Embrey, the cardiothoracic surgeon, has seen a doubling of his cases already,” Humphrey said. “The (open-heart surgery) volumes are very much coming back.”
In another partnership, Danville Regional is working with the LifePoint-owned Martinsville Memorial Hospital to provide cardiology care for their patients.
“The need for cardiology coverage in Martinsville is greater than the cardiologists in the area can currently provide, so we met with and requested that the Danville cardiologists assist with the coverage issue,” Humphrey said. “To their credit, they became credentialed and privileged to practice in Martinsville. Duke Heart Services is also lending its support with one of their cardiologists covering two days a week and the Danville cardiologists covering three days a week, which includes some Saturdays.”
He said that was an intermediate measure, since the Martinsville hospital is currently recruiting cardiologists.
Danville Regional has also partnered with the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine to bring in a residency program, which Humphrey said has brought positive comments from the community.
“The hospitalist program has also been getting a lot of positive comments from physicians and the patients being taken care of,” Humphrey said.
Hospitalists care for the patients in the hospital once they are admitted by their own physician.
Four hospitalists out of the current 15 on staff are scheduled to leave, one to pursue a fellowship and others for family reasons; however, the hospital is actively recruiting for replacements.

Millions in investments
Since LifePoint purchased Danville Regional Medical Center, the corporation has invested about $45 million in the hospital for facility improvements and equipment.
“We really do hear a lot of positive comments about the continued investment into the infrastructure of the hospital,” Humphrey said.
He cited the nursing staff as another big plus for the hospital and said that the usage of contract nursing staff has been eliminated, which he calls a “major accomplishment.”
“We have about a 5 percent turnover rate now, which is outstanding, and we are very proud of that,” he said. “The majority of the class (graduating from the hospital’s School of Nursing) this year will be hired. That’s always our game plan with the nursing school program.”
The nursing staff is “basically” fully staffed at this time, although Humphrey said that there is always some ebb and flow.
The patient census, or the number of admitted patients in the hospital at any given time, also has peaks and valleys, he said, but remains solid.
“We’ve seen a little softening of the census with the economic downturn and people putting elective procedures off as long as can,” he said. “Some of the physicians also say their patient loads are up and down. It’s really uneven right now.”
In other initiatives in the past year, the hospital has just opened a wound treatment center and an inpatient rehabilitation center and purchased another bloodmobile.

Revisiting impressions
New to the area 18 months ago, Humphrey said that his initial impressions of the Danville community were that “the people in Danville are open and friendly, there is a great future with all the economic developments and nobody knows how to merge.”
On Tuesday, Humphrey revisited those observations and said that the Danville community is still open and friendly and that, although economic development has been “stymied,” he remains “cautiously optimistic.”
On that last count, however, he holds to his original opinion, as many others do, that Danvillians are still merging-impaired.

Over the Christmas weekend a child fractured his wrist on an ATV in Danville. Their parents rushed him to Duke because they don't trust DRMC. Forget what you pro-lifepoint people think or want, this is happening more often because the people of the community do not trust Lifepoint. This is the 3rd I know of to go elsewhere like this.

Pretty obvious that the folks in Danville have given up all hope of DRMC ever being a decent hospital.

No point in posting anything new here.

Maybe we should start a new blog about Centra, with contact numbers and describing all the great experiences we have when we visit their office in Danville.

Thank heavens someone is looking out for us.

All of the OR staff had to come in on a very slow day to clean because Joint Commision is on the way!!!! Why not keep the place clean to start with?? I guess the home laundered scrubs have to be kept a secret and all of the cloth hats have to be hidden.

Anonymous said...

I am currently at a teaching hospital in this state and Cloth hats are found to be cleaner than the paper hats and it is a rule here that ONLY Cloth can be worn on the floor, this is a Magnet hospital and HIGHLY respected in VA.
Also there is NO WHERE I have been where scrubs aren't furnished for every OR employee, Danville PROVIDES OR scrubs for EVERY OR employee, the JC is coming because lifepoint is unfit to run a hospital and the sooner Centra cripples DRMC and runs lifepoint out of town the better.

The Joint Comission is coming for a scheduled visit. The visit to DRMC has been delayed BY THE JOINT COMISSION,not DRMC due to its own request for lack of resources.
An informed person would know this has been the case in many instances across the nation. The delayed visit to DRMC is not an exception.
I,like you, want this to happen ASAP.

Anonymous said...

Fact. Centra has filed a "letter of intent" with the Virginia Department of Health indicating that it will seek to obtain a Certificate of Public Need to build an outpatient facility in Danville, which will include a surgery center.

We need a quality outpatient surgery center in Danville and this will supply a need. Many of us obviously have no trust in DRMC.

For several years , I earn money with the help of these programs.
I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and I started with funny 500 bucks.
Right now, I'm very close at catching at last a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Turn to my web site to get additional info.

Centra plans to build an outpatient surgery center and medical complex in Danville, the Lynchburg health care agency announced Saturday.

Centra officials said that many patients from Danville have been traveling to Lynchburg and North Carolina for some procedures. On Friday, Centra applied for state authorization for a facility to provide those services in Danville.

If granted permission, Centra could break ground on the center on Piedmont Drive early in 2011 and open it in 2012.

The 27,000-square-foot complex would include an ambulatory surgery center, a 24-hour emergency department and medical imaging.

“One of the goals is to provide more medical surgical services in Danville so they can stay in Virginia and have their medical procedures,” said Tom Jividen, executive vice president of Centra. “We’d like to keep those health care dollars in Virginia if we could.”

Centra is Lynchburg’s largest employer with more than 5,500 workers. It has medical facilities throughout Central Virginia.

Serving patients from Danville is a relatively new development, Jividen said. “It used to not happen at all. Five years ago it was very rare for us to get a patient from Danville,” he said. “But now it’s a fairly common occurrence.”

Last year Centra opened a medical practice in Danville to offer physical therapy and specialty clinics. Last fall a group of surgeons suggested that Centra build an outpatient surgery center in Danville, Jividen said.

Centra needs a Certificate of Public Need from Virginia’s Commissioner of Health to authorize the surgical and imaging facilities. It applied for that certificate Friday, and a decision is expected in July.

Centra has secured an option to buy a six-acre lot on Piedmont Drive, next to the Sam’s Club store, Jividen said.

Even if the certificate is not approved, Centra still could choose to build only the emergency medical facility, Jividen said.

Although the emergency center would not have capabilities for overnight stays, patients could be transported to Danville Regional Medical Center or to Lynchburg to be admitted, Jividen said. It would have access to ambulance and helicopter transportation, he said.

Centra’s current practice in Danville would not move, Jividen said

About 15 surgeons have expressed interest in operating in the facility, Jividen said.

“Centra is nationally recognized for quality, safety, services and advanced technology,” said George Dawson, Centra president and CEO, in a news release. “We expect to offer those same quality services in the Danville area.”

• Gentry is a staff writer for The News & Advance in Lynchburg.

Probably will be a bunch of excellent jobs at the Centra surgery center and Prompt Care. Centra will be happy to hire the experienced DRMC "associates" who live here in Danville. They've done a lot of that in the past five years.

I would rather see a company like Centra buy out DRMC then open a separate surgery center. DRMC can become a quality organization but first Lifepoint has to be out of the picture.

Anonymous said...

Centra is not going to buy DRMC.

Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?

Centra will attract the paying patients who need outpatient surgery (orthopedics, urology, ophtalmology, general surgery) and leave the poor folks to languish in the DRMC Emergency Room.

I would dare to say that prior to Lifepoint that half the citizens of Danville never heardof or knew about Joint Commission. By Lifepoint making raves for passing their inspections alone says volumes about how bad DRMC is now. Was never a topic of public discussion prior to the sell!!!!!!

Not true!!!

It was always a topic of conversation inside the hospital. Especially when it was possible we wouldn't pass, and it happened more than once. The admin at that time kept it, and other things secret from the general public. I suspect that was one of the reasons they were so eager to sell, over the dissention of people like Landon Wyatt. The hospital has always had skeletons in it's closets, it was just not as open about it.

Anonymous said...

You are sooooo wrong.

Anonymous said...

Opulently I assent to but I think the post should prepare more info then it has.

Anonymous said...

"The hospital has always had skeletons in it's closets"

I have to agree with that. There was a Medicare billing fraud scare a few years back, well before DRMC was sold to Lifepoint. DRMC was, at its pinnacle, mediocre-to-average. Now, after Lifepoint has had hold of it for five years. Ugh.

Bring it on Centra!

Anonymous said...

Skeletons? yes. We at DRMC have had them as all institutions have. Accreditation however was never an issue.
The billing fiasco spoken of, yes, occurred when it was "just" DRMC;LifePoint did settle that. However, billing issues remain...oh yes.
I applaud the results of the just completed accreditation visit. However, the issues families/patients and staff deal with daily haven't gone away. The problems are perpetual.
I,too, on the other hand so welcome CENTRA to Danville. Fingers crossed please that the appeal to the state for the new Centra facility/services is approved.

It will be over when Centra has the last word...

Rumor has it that Representative Danny Marshall (R, 14th District) is in favor of the proposed Centra Surgery Center in Danville.

I guess there goes Lifepoint's strategy of trying to defeat the Certificate of Need application. Maybe they need a "Plan B."

I wonder if Centra will apply for a new business loan from the city? They will be generating new jobs in the community.

Anonymous said...

C'mon Centra. We need some quality care in Danville.

The hospital is losing all its credibility. You have nurses having sex with enviromental techs in the hospital, getting caught and the tech getting fired and the nurse getting a 3 day vacation. You have nurses calling surgeons on their cell phones and getting a smack down from the surgeons wife. What has happened to this hospital. Its obvious that the hospital is not attracting the best & the brightest no more

Anonymous said...

You gotta be kidding....
That behavior has been going on for the last 30 or more years!!!
Nurses and Doctors getting caught in closets, wives of MD's coming to the hospital to confront the "other women", as well as a host of other transgressions. Don't ever think this type of behavior is new. It isn't.

Seems that J boy has seen the writing on the wall, and is bailing out of the DRMC trainwreck.

Jerel Humphrey did a lot of good for DRMC under the most difficult of circumstances. Taking the CEO position at that hospital in 2007 was much the same as being promoted to Captain of the Titanic AFTER it hit the iceberg. I wish him and his family all the best.

He took a lot of abuse for things that were beyond his control and had too put up a good front to cover for the poor decisions of his superiors in Brentwood.

How many CEO's will this be for DRMC?

Eight since Lifepoint purchased the hospital in 2005, including interim and permanent CEOs.

Anonymous said...

The only thing He did for DRMC was perpetuate the stupidity of lifepoint and the
greed of coporate america towards its consumers. He drew a big salary for as long as he could and now that Centra( a real hospital) is applying major pressure,he's bailing out, actually a smart move.

Mike Jarman said...

Lifepoint is problematic but with the departure of Humphries we have a chance to improve conditions at the hospital. He was a menace to the people of this community and has proven beyond any doubt to me that he is not to be trusted and did not care what was best for the hospital or patients. My experiences with him have been horrendous. My name is Mike Jarman. I am not afraid to say who I am, just happy this guy is finally leaving.

Funny how one can go from "I'm going to run the Centra outpatient center" to "that place is not going to be all it's cracked up to be". Why the sudden change of heart?

Anonymous said...

who's gonna run the outpatient surg center? What are you talking about? Centra would have nothing to do with lifepoint....

Yeah after Ruth fires everyone she and lifepoint can leave for good.

I don't think Lifepoint is capable of appointing a competent CEO to DRMC. The hospital is failing and they have no intention on improving the situation, so the new CEO will be the new fall-guy. He won't last 12 months.

Anonymous said...

"I'd like to know the name of the loser who posted the last anonymous comment"

Gee, aren't all the comments posted here anonymous? Where's the fun in taking unfair and unwarrented shots at people you don't know if you could be held responsible for it?

Here's the 2nd-place finisher in the DRMC CEO lottery:

A little speculation about Doloresco's replacement...

I've been following the news of LPNT's sale of Coastal Carolina Medical Center to Tenet. The sale closed on Sunday, July 1.
http://www.islandpacket.com/news/local/story/6570164p-5848559c.html
The highlights of the sale are that Tenet is CCMC's third owner since 2004 (Province > LPNT > Tenet) and the facility is expecting $7 million in pre-tax losses.

One quote in the article caught my eye....
"Newcomer Teresa Urquhart will serve as interim CEO at Coastal Carolina until a full-time replacement is found. Urquhart is the chief operating officer of a 351-bed Tenet-owned hospital in El Paso, Texas. She will replace Eric Deaton, who will leave to work at another LifePoint medical center in Virginia. It's unclear what his new role will be or the name of the hospital where he'll work."
Think Mr. Deaton is headed to southside Virginia? "

and the public relations NIGHTMARE of Danville, the Emergency Dept, be addressed?

Anonymous said...

Ruth McDaniel is an itinerant interim CEO for Lifepoint. She was at DRMC for awhile in 2006 and 2007, serving as Chief Nursing Officer and then CEO, sandwiched between Art Doloresco and Jerel Humphrey.

Anonymous said...

thanks for the info..from all i've read about her, i thought perhaps she flew in on a broom.

Anonymous said...

The citizens of this area need to start complaining about this mess at DRMC now. The new CEO may be a good guy, but he was just sent here to smooth over ruffled feathers from all the havoc deathpoint has caused. They figure southside residents are lazy and stupid enough not to support Centra by making a public outcry for medical help. The public stood by while the five board members pulled this over on us. All you do is whine and snipe about this. This is America, you have a right to your opinion, PROTEST and drive in what may be the final nail in the coffin called DRMC. Help bring Centra here and maybe we can keep the top notch physicians that have not already left us. Contact Richmond now...don't let Davenport get the inside line on us again in the Attorney General's office...fight people...promote what you deserve.

Anonymous said...

So Deaton has publically said that he is going to block Centra, NO WAY. He has just become the cheif of the most pitiful excuse for a hospital that exists, Citizens have said in various ways( by going elsewhere centra for example)and publically on the news how bad DRMC is and that they have NO loyalty to lifepoint AT ALL , and want Centra in Danville. Call the City of Danville offices, Call Richmond, and call all representatives, the Attorney General, and the Governors office and tell them that Danville wants this nightmare of a hospital stopped and WE WANT CENTRA.

Anonymous said...

What's the number in Richmond ?

A BIT OF TRUTH ABOUT SETTING AN EXAMPLE FOR STAFF....although not the best or strongest example(s), it does set the tone ........As for the comments about nursing leaders selling one another out, well that is just a way of life in that department.

I am glad to see that Lifepoint has sent in another CEO to run our hospital. However how many CEO’s does it take to run the hospital? No matter who they send they are still carrying out corporate orders so what is changing other than the faces? As for our present CNO and her whorshipers that are kissing butt, it is time for a change. Ms. Logan is in her position for the social activites that the Directors have to offer, such as lake trips, etc. Isn’t the CNO suppose to be there to make things better for the nurses and fight for their rights. Well that is something she isn’t doing. Many are loosing there jobs or being shoved around from floor to floor. As for the directors and clinical managers, it is time that you get off your high horse and remember where you once were, good nurses, now you don’t even have patient contact instead you would rather spend time hunting down staff to do something as simple as putting a patient on a bed pan. Maybe if the Directors and clinical managers spent less time across the street smoking and talking negatively about staff members where others can here then they could get their jobs done. I for one am tired of seeing them rounding the corner every hour to go smoke. As for Ms. Logan, the staff isn’t stupid we know that you go to your truck to smoke which is on hospital property. I for one am looking forward to meeting the new CEO and am going to tell him what I think and how things are actually being run at the hospital and how the staff is working very hard to care for our patients and keep the communities trust. Once Ms. Logan is gone (which I see coming soon) so will the Directors that kissing butt. Let’s see which Director and Clinical Manager sells out who first.

Anonymous said...

And as Becky Logan's ass became less in size, her lasciviousness increased proportionally..........
too, how did she explain those several accidents she had that involved falls of some type......too much (closet) drinking perhaps?

Posted by christy on March 02, 2010 at 11:54 am
You are so right-whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Ms. Logan everyone is watching you-isn’t your vehicle on hospital property. Management should set a good example -if the new CEO wants to see his finest than just go to one of the first friday concerts in Danville or to the local watering hole and you will see how your upper management behave in public. Someone needs to tell Mark how ridiculous he acts when he is drunk and how stupid Becky looks chasing him!

Anonymous said...

I don't care how many hospital employees (including management) act like drunken fools when off the job. I only care about on the job performance and as far as management is concerned it is severely lacking. Will the new Captain sink with the ship? The more he screams "no Centra", the louder our Danville citizens need to holler "no Lifepoint".

Anonymous said...

Appears that lifepoint thinks the citizenry of Danville is ignorant to a fault. All the ads for "Duke at Danville".

Not much to talk about of late. Rumor is that Lifepoint is finally getting ready to negotiate sale of DRMC to Centra, and will sell it for a loss of tens of millions of dollars.
Bad news is that Centra will close down most services except ED and labor and delivery, and everyone in Danville will STILL have to leave town to get decent care. Except it will now be a roadtrip to Lynchburg instead of to Durham or Greensboro

Anonymous said...

Is that just wishful thinking or all out stupidity. To thing that anyone in Danville would even have an inkling of a deal like that going down is, at best, laughable.

Smoke some more....

Anonymous said...

I see...so a smart company like Centra decides to spend millions...and then keep the two biggest money losers of services in place. Should we just make ourselves look all the more incompetent to outsiders looking in?

Anonymous said...

Genial brief and this fill someone in on helped me alot in my college assignement. Gratefulness you as your information.

Anonymous said...

Nope. Centra would use the ED to feed Lynchburg General and Va Baptist up in Lynchburg. L&D would be kept because it is too far to go to Lynchburg to deliver a baby.

So, why could Centra want to BUILD an ED, outpatient surgery and imaging center in Danville? To bankrupt DRMC so they can buy the hospital for next to nothing.
Why invest $15 to $18 Million to build their own outpatient facility, when Centra might be able to buy all those things and more if Lifepoint finally sees the handwriting on the wall and would be willing to unload DRMC for not much more than that, so they can extricate themselves from one of the worst boondoggles in health care history?

Be careful what you ask for, Danville. Centra is not interested in investing in Danville, or really increasing the level of services available in this town. What they are maneuvering for is to get more patients to drive up to Lynchburg for care, rather than to Greensboro and Durham.

When the dust settles, we won't be any better off here. There will be no increase in the level of services available or the quality of care here in Danville. We are just going to be pushed to go to Centra rather than Moses Cone or Duke. In fact, more doctors will end up leaving Danville as the primary care doctors here are bought up by Centra and have to refer to Centra specialists up in Lynchburg, or to those who come to Danville a couple of days a month but only do testing and procedures up in Lynchburg.

No, I'm neither pro Lifepoint nor anti-Centra. Just a realist. No matter whether Centra or Lifepoint prevails, the people of Danville will STILL HAVE TO LEAVE TOWN TO GET DECENT MEDICAL CARE>

In regards to the letter to the editor this morning; SHAME ON YOU Al Newman and the other eight of your friends. May your finders fee find you and the others out.BE SURE, IT WILL FIND YOU.

Another letter to the editor quote:

"My dear mother suffered a stroke in 1975, and Danville Memorial Hospital, as it was then known, knew very little about how to help her. She remained an invalid for almost 10 years. I have made it explicitly clear to my family and friends that should I become ill and be unable to speak for myself, I am not to be taken to Danville Regional Medical Center. They are to take me to Lynchburg General. If I should die on the way, then that’s what I would prefer over being in Danville Regional."

Seems the "Old" hospital wasn't as good as some would have it seem. This letter is a prime example of two things...1. Danvillians will complain as long as there's breath in their body. 2. The new DRMC might suck a little, but it has nothing to do with who owns it....it's just always sucked.

Read for yourselves fellow Danvillians.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm. 1975

Anonymous said...

You know, I've never run into anyone from here who refers to people who live in Danville as "Danvillians." My guess is that the above post was written by a "Brentwoodian."

What I find so humorous is that the Lifepoint schlocks blame the people of Danville for the problems with the hospital and their own inadequacies. When you look down you nose at your customers and fail to meet their expectations, your business ultimately fails.

Yeah, DRMC was never a world-class hospital before Lifepoint arrived in town, but it was never this bad, either.

Makes no difference now. Centra has stepped in, and the free market will correct the situation.

Anonymous said...

If you look at the SiteMeter, it appears the author of the "Read for yourselves fellow Danvillians" post logged onto the blog from an ISP in Washington, DC. Hmmm....

Anonymous said...

In 1975 it was the infancy of EMS as we know it today. The DOT made the first true rules of what should and shouldn't happen on EMS calls due to the high incidence of deaths from vehicle crashes. The rules were then set forth by a board and enforced by the DOT et Al because the DOT had the authority to withold money to the states for road improvements. Thus EMS has blossomed into the real service that it is today.
Along those lines There was VERY little understanding of how to treat a stroke by EMS or Hospitals until current modalities of treatment coupled with high-res scanning capabilities of today were developed(way after 1975)
It's sad that happened to you but to think it was any one facilities fault in the infancy of specialized treatments is foolish, to think lifepoint is in any way , shape, or form even close to the hospital DRMC was in the 2000's is ignorant and foolish.

Anonymous said...

I agree completely. The treatment of a stroke in 1975 was to do, well, nothing. There were no CAT scans, no clot-busting drugs, and minimal physical therapy. The care would have been the same at DRMC, Duke or anywhere else.

Danville Regional CEO tells City Council he wants to earn trust

By Denice Thibodeau

Published: April 6, 2010

Eric Deaton, the new CEO at Danville Regional Medical Center, addressed Danville City Council members during its regular meeting Tuesday night.

Deaton said he normally arrives at the hospital at 7 a.m. to makes rounds and hold meetings with staff.

“It’s probably the best time of the day for me,” Deaton said. “I can learn a lot from the direct caregivers about the care they’re giving and what their needs are.”

New equipment at the hospital now allows some new procedures, and a new cardiac catheterization lab allows state-of-the-art imaging, Deaton said.

Recent successes have included being named by Consumer Reports as having no infections in the cardiac care unit — “A great testament to the nurses and staff who work there,” Deaton noted — and an inspection from the Joint Commission that evaluated 1,700 items and only came up with one recommended change.

Councilman Gary Miller, a cardiologist who performs surgery at the hospital, noted that the inspection is roughly comparable to having OSHA make an inspection. He said the last inspection netted the hospital a list of 14-16 problem areas.

“I’ve never heard of (a hospital) getting just one,” Miller said.

Deaton said more nurses and nurses’ aides will be added in some areas, and 12 new residents — doctors who have graduated with a medical degree — will arrive on July 1 to begin their residencies.

Deaton said the Emergency Department is a primary focus, and there are plans under way to streamline admissions so some patients can skip being processed through the Emergency Department.

Councilman Larry Campbell has been named to the hospital’s board of directors, Deaton said, and the board has approved adding another member, a physician from Pittsylvania County. Deaton said a decision on who will be named to the board for that position has not yet been decided.

Deaton also said he has joined Riverview Rotary, been asked to serve on the board of the Boys & Girls Club and he and his wife have already purchased a home in Danville that they hope to settle into quickly.

Councilman Buddy Rawley noted that “colleagues back in Wytheville gave you high marks,” and Councilman Adam Tomer said he had heard from friends who work at the hospital how impressed they are that the new CEO makes rounds and talks to staff.

Deaton said he wants to earn the trust of the community, and he looks forward to working with city and county leaders.

In other action, City Council approved:

• an ordinance amending the budget that allows the transportation department to get $10,000 from the Virginia Department of Aviation, and matching funds from the city, to promote Danville Regional Airport;

• changed the zoning on property on Westover Drive near Piedmont Place from Old Town Residential to Planned Shopping Center;

• changed the zoning on property on Piedmont Place from Planned Shopping Center to Highway Retail Commercial; and

• approved a resolution to continue offering Virginia Juvenile Community Crime Control Act programs, including electronic monitoring and outreach detention programs.

Centra to provide locals another option

By Tara Bozick

Centra hopes to benefit both local physicians and patients by increasing services and options in Danville, an official said.

Centra announced Saturday that the not-for-profit regional health care provider plans to build a medical complex with an ambulatory surgery center, a 24-hour emergency department and medical imaging on Piedmont Drive in Danville. The surgery center project is contingent upon receiving a Certificate of Public Need by Virginia’s Commissioner of Health.

The core idea is to increase residents’ access to health care while also keeping health care dollars in Virginia instead of North Carolina, said Skip Leavitt, vice president for physician practice management.

“We think that having a facility there with some options will give people a choice that will benefit everyone in the area,” Leavitt said.

During the past few years, Centra Lynchburg General Hospital’s emergency department saw increasing numbers of patients coming from the Danville area. Danville area residents also visited Lynchburg for high-level services and specialty care.

All Virginia hospitals report data like where patients come from and the kind of services used. Centra had been tracking data for the Lynchburg hospital and other hospitals.

In response to questions about locating in Danville when the city has a hospital, Leavitt said Centra could “co-exist” with Danville Regional Medical Center and work to keep patients in Danville. Physicians could be affiliated with both providers, as Centra won’t have any restrictions on its end, he added.

Last year, Centra opened a practice by Piedmont PrimeCare East on Airport Drive to provide medical specialists. Centra met with Danville physicians before opening that practice.

Before announcing the latest project, Centra had been meeting with local surgical groups and physicians. Danville surgeons will be offered ownership interest in the surgery center, according to Centra’s news release.

Centra is still open to talking with any physicians in the Danville area who might be interested, Leavitt added.

“We’re really in the middle of this right now,” Leavitt said. “Things are fluid.”

Centra hopes the new facility could provide physicians a place with the latest technology and equipment to practice medicine, Leavitt said. Ultimately, the complex could possibly help to retain and recruit physicians and surgeons in Danville, he added.

Centra accepts all insurance and as a nonprofit, invests back any money it makes into all of its communities, Leavitt added. Centra continues to be nationally recognized for the quality of its care, he said.

So far, physicians and surgeons have been welcoming, Leavitt added.

“I really felt like everyone has been up front and honest and engaging,” Leavitt said. “People were looking for solutions.”

In response to questions about Centra’s announcement, Danville Regional Medical Center’s CEO Jerel Humphrey said via e-mail that DRMC continues to enhance the high-quality care it already provides through its affiliation with Duke Medicine and the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

DRMC continues to invest in the Danville area, providing $200 million in community benefit (charitable care and for those eligible for Medicaid) in 2008, Humphrey continued. That same year, the hospital paid almost $2 million in taxes to Danville and Virginia and continues to provide more than 1,200 “good-paying, quality jobs.”

Finally, it’s all up to the community

By Published by The Editorial Board

Dr. Eduardo Fraifeld of Southside Pain Solutions makes an excellent point about the coming battle between Danville Regional Medical Center and Centra Health.

“We’ve seen a massive number of people who not only refuse to go to the hospital, they just vehemently don’t want to step foot in the hospital,” Fraifeld said. “I’ve tried convincing them. What can I do? I can’t keep losing my business.”

Over the past five years, local doctors have been caught between their patients and the problems at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Now, with Lynchburg-based Centra Health seeking state approval to build an ambulatory surgical center in Danville, the anger of the past five years is being released in the form of letters of support to the Virginia Certificate of Public Need program.

For doctors like Fraifeld, Centra’s proposal offers a chance to recapture local patients who have been leaving the community for their elective surgical care.

“How things will happen, nobody knows,” said Dr. Pradeep Pradhan. “I hope Centra will do the right thing, and I hope Danville Regional will do the right thing. At the end of the day, I would like to take care of my patient.”

When local people choose not to go to Danville Regional, that hurts the practices of local doctors. Over time, that will lower the number of doctors practicing in the community, which will further limit the medical choices available for the remaining patients.

No one should want that, of course. This community needs a strong, viable hospital — something that can’t happen if patients continue to leave town in search of medical care. But the frustration people have with Danville Regional should not — and will not — be papered over in the name of community health care.

People are angry. People are frustrated. For the first time in five years, people have a real say about the future of health care in Danville by writing letters to the state in support of Centra’s ambulatory surgical center.

“What’s LifePoint ready to do?” Dr. Fraifeld asked. “In order to improve this hospital, they’re going to have to recapture the faith of this community that is so damaged, they’re really going to have to bend over backwards to get it back.”

LifePoint believes it is already doing what it needs to do to recapture patients and position itself to better serve this community. For those who disagree, there is finally something they can do.

On the advice of another I followed her lead and moved out of Danville due to needing a lot of medical care. I stopped going to DRMC because they didn't care how I was cared for and wouldn't listen when I had problems. Wake Med does a great job and they actually care..........WOW, after living in Danville I didn't know such a place existed.

You mean there's life outside of Danville? NO!!!

Anonymous said...

CNO is gone.

Good Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Anyone want to go in together to send flowers??

Anonymous said...

Send flowers?
As a parting gift or to the next hospital as a RIP gesture to the nursing department she'll destroy?

Anonymous said...

None of it will matter until Centra is in and lifepoint is GONE..

Anonymous said...

Be careful what you ask for. Centra is going to buy all the primary care doctors' practices in town, drive the surgeons and specialists out of business and we will STILL all have to drive to Lynchburg or Greensboro or Durham to get decent specialty care.

Lifepoint is a problem for sure. But Centra isn't the solution.

The community and the Danville doctors stepping up and demanding accountability from the hospital, possibly boycotting it or even building another not-for-profit community hospital is a better option than becoming a satellite feeder for Centra. Just ask Bedford or Farmville.

The hearing is May 7th for Centra. We need as many people as possible to be there and give their 3 minutes of why we need them. DRMC will fight this for their own greedy reasons, but we need medical care that actually works. It is in todays Danville paper.

"possibly boycotting it or even building another not-for-profit community hospital is"

Centra is another non profit and Danville can't support building a hospital, nor will it after the economic rape that occurred from the 5 crooks.
Centra IS the solution.

I knew it, I knew it, I KNEW IT. I predicted in an earlier post that it wouldn't take long before some local poster turned their attention toward Centra in a critical fashion. What the community really deserves is for all the physicians to pack up and leave, the hospital close and then be left to wonder "what the heck happened?" Ultimate definition of a low performer...complain about everything. And you wonder why things are as they are?

I knew it, I knew it, I KNEW IT. Someone was going to post another stupid comment on this blog.

"it wouldn't take long before some local poster turned their attention toward Centra in a critical fashion."

You were correct, however i suspect it's someone from lifepoint trying their lame version of a propaganda war.

Anonymous said...

Sorry...wrong again. I'm about as far from employed by Lifepoint as can be.

Anonymous said...

Then you're economically ignorant. Sorry but you are.

Anonymous said...

Hmm. Economically ignorant. That's a new one. How so? That's like those saying "competition is good" for a company. It may be good for their customers, but its never good for a company to have competition. Just ask the manager of K-Mart what happened when Wal- Mart came to Danville, and then ask the manager of Wal-Mart what happened when Target got here.

And then there is that nasty issue of cheap foreign textiles and Dan River, Inc. That turned out great for Danville, didn't it?

I agree Danville, if lets centra in, will loose more and more, including specialized services. If they will get their foot in the door, they will move all specialized services already existing in Lynchburg. So Danville will loose everything except basic medical care, people will travel more (some are already doing it of their choice and will keep doing it) and Danville will loose more physicians, more revenue and jobs and critics can enjoy being left alone here. Everyone knows a not for profit hospital always makes profit otherwise they are out. Its choice we will make and get another outsider here. Building an Ambulatory center is not an answer, that is fine at DRMC. People can still travel to Lynchburg today if they want to be there. Please be ware to loose cancer treatment, heart surgery etc specialized care to Lynchburg, we wont be able to look back and correct anything.
Rest is what danvillians want to do themselves.

"Everyone knows a not for profit hospital always makes profit otherwise they are out."
And the 5 idiots thatsold it lied to everyone about this because they were economically ignorant.
The comparison of overseas companies NAFTA/ CAFTA are useless, EVERYONE knew that they would drag the US into 3rd world state.
Local competition is good, it's only bad due to danville having NO leadership, such as Lynchburg Roanoke and Greensboro have had.
As for correcting anything, that ship has sailed the 5 morons conducted the ultimate betrayal , they sold out generations for play money.

Anonymous said...

Got news for ya.
Danville has been losing specialized srvices since day one of lifepoints ignorance. Cancer docs, neurosurgeons, etc gone SPECIFICALLY because of lifepoint.

Anonymous said...

Actually, not totally because of Lifepoint. Specialist physicians' practices are exquisitely sensitive to economic conditions. While the docs and the community choose to blame the hospital (a convenient and obvious scapegoat) in fact, the real cause is the deteriorating economic situation in our community.

Thirty years ago when the textile mills were at their peak and tobacco was king, the average household income in Danville was above the statewide average. It has now fallen to half of average for the state of Virginia.

What that means is this community doesn't have the wealth to support many services such as specialty medical care, any more than Danville can support a Barnes and Noble or a Best Buy.

You can blame DRMC all you want for the loss of physicians, but they would have left anyway because those docs can't make enough money in Danville to keep their practices open. It is much easier for a doctor to make a decent living working in Lynchburg, Richmond or Greensboro.

That is the issue facing the remaining specialty physician practices in Danville as they reach the economic breaking point and close or leave town. Just like Boscov's, Harris Teeter and Pier One.

get ready to loose more specislized services, my fellow danvillian and dont blame all opposing Centra to be lifepoint employees....grass is always green on other side. Good luck to Danville and you all.

Anonymous said...

The only folks who are going to end up ahead in all this is the Register & Bee, who is selling full-color ads to both Centra and DRMC like they were hotcakes.

Steven Kaylor is laughing all the way to the bank.

Quit blamming the economy, the citizens and Centra for Lifepoints greed. The fab 5 and Lifepoint made this mess.Nobody else.

Anonymous said...

What is "blamming?"

Spell check busted on your iPad?

Anonymous said...

"fact, the real cause is the deteriorating economic situation in our community."
True but...Danville has never had a real economy due to shortsightedness... and the docs that left before me said "We(I) cannot deal with lifepoint costing me money any longer"
lifepoint WAS the main catalyst.

"this community doesn't have the wealth to support many services such as specialty medical care, "
Partially true- this community doesn't have the wealth for a For profit hospital, the nonprofit made 65 million the last year before being sold. The specialty docs left because of the "share holders of lifepoint" One of the main neurosurgeons actually went to Centra because of lifepoint.
The true blame is on NAFTA, CAFTA, FOR-profit hospitals in general, and the groups of short-sighted money grubbing financial rapist families that have opressed Danville for decades while everything around it has flourished.

Anonymous said...

You left out the Klu Klux Klan. Don't foget to blame them. Oh yeah, and flouride in the drinking water. It rots our brains and turns us into "short-sighted money grubbing financial rapist families"

You know, funny fact about for-profit hospitals: insurance companies, medicare and medicaid pay them exactly the same amount as the non-profits for a procedure or ER visit.
